Owen County has an amazing group of giving and caring individuals who are always excited to help others when an opportunity arises. This is one of the many reason’s I’m so proud to live here. One of the many examples of how our community shines is through the success of our annual Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society is devoted to not only finding a cure for cancer but they are also focused on treatments, patient services, and awareness.  Most of you know what a worthy cause our Relay for Life is and from the bottom of my heart I would like to thank all of you who currently support it.

Saturday Feb 12th starting at 5pm in the Owen County High School gymnasium the Boys Running Rebels basketball team will play South Oldham at home. This will be the Relay for Life Kickoff game! Part of the admission proceeds will go to Relay; we will also be offering T-Shirts and baskets for suggested donations to benefit Relay for Life. We want to encourage all survivors to attend and be recognized, and all Running Rebel fans to support our team and our communities fight for a cure at this event!

I am the team captain for the OC Relay 4 Life Community Team and I hold the recognition chair on the committee now. If you are not on a Relay for Life Team already, I would really like for you to join our community team and walk with us at this year’s 2011 relay on May 27th. I will need a $10 registration fee from you in order to be a team member. You can register online or I can get the paperwork to you:

Anyone can join this community team and walk with us on May 27th and help us raise money all year. There are many opportunities to raise money and I intend for my team to win the luminary sales competition! Please let me know if you are interested.

Please use this forum to share the progress of your Relay for Life team, and share with us the reason that you relay. If you have a survivor story or a cancer victim you’d like to honor please use this forum to share their story as well.

Thanks and God Bless.

It's amazing to see that such

It's amazing to see that such people actually exist, they are the ones makes us all hope for better times. Because of them the everyday life of those in need of support is another reason to fight for better times.

Amber's Christmas Wish

This letter to Santa was written by a young girl for her Owen County English class.

Dear Santa Claus,

I don't want much for Christmas this year. As you probably already know, I gave my life to Christ this year. During the process of a new life for me, I learned you should not ask for needless things. Because I know how God feels, I will ask for things that will help others in my life, and thank the people who give gracious gifts. I think this Christmas will be the perfect opportunity to try to be approved, even a little, by God, and this is one of the ways.

The first gift I would wish for Christmas is that I receive a five dollar bill. I believe this in not a needless "want". If I receive this five dollar bill, I will give it to my mother and tell her it is for as many packs of gum should could get. The reason I want her to buy gum is because she is trying to stop smoking . . . .

We don't have much money and my mother thinks if she stopped buying her cigarettes we would have more money. She seems to always be thinking of us, because she told us, "I am going to warn you all that I will be cranky! When I do, I need somthing to get my mond off smoking. You could give me gum or anything like th sort to get my mind on something else." As you can see, I will need all of the gum I can get.

My last but not least request for you would be a miracle. I am going to ask for a cure for Cancer. I know I am not smart enough to get the cure on my own. Yes, I know scientists are working on the cure but too many people are dying, at this very second, from Cancer. I wish you would give the cure to me as fast as possible because my grandfather has Prostate Cancer. I pray every day that he doesn't die from this awful thing. He has not been saved and I am scared for him. I hope you can give me this Christmas miracle.

With love,

Amber Gover

Christmas 2010

If only we could all see things through the eyes of a child! Amber has received plenty of gum for her mother this Christmas; however, her ultimate Christmas wish/prayer is still unanswered and her grandfather continues to fight for his life against the monster we have named cancer. The American Cancer Society offers us an opportunity to join in the fight against cancer and make a difference. I encourage you to participate in Owen County’s Relay for Life 2011 and help Amber get her wish next year. Please join a team, make a donation, participate in the survivor lap, or at the very least remember all those affected by cancer in your prayers.

Why I relay...

I relay because cancer has negatively affected too many people that I love and we are past due in finding a cure! I relay in honor of my Grandmother, Emma Jean Slone who died too young because of cancer. Grandmother lost her battle with cancer in 1995 when she was only 54 years young.
