Playoff Preview

Opponent: Covington Holy Cross Indians

Place: Scott High School, Taylor Mill

Time: 7 p.m.

• The Indians finished the season 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the District 6. They defeated Newport and Lloyd and lost to Newport Central Catholic.

• Holy Cross is coached by Bruce Kozerski. Bengal fans may be familiar with Kozerski, who played for the orange and black for 12 seasons. He was a member of the Superbowl team that lost to the San Francisco 49ers in 1989.

• Scott High School in Taylor Mill was the third option as to where to play Friday night’s game. The Indians share a home field with Holmes who opens up the Class 4A Playoffs at home against East Jessamine. The other option was to play at Newport but that field was being used by Newport Catholic who hosts Carroll County Friday night in the Class 2A Playoffs.

• The Indians feature one of the state’s most explosive players in senior Markel Walker. Not including Friday night, Walker has rushed for 1,037 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also thrown for 992 yards and eight TDs.

 • Holy Cross will be looking for its third straight opening-round win in the Class 2A Playoffs. In 2007, the Indians defeated Lloyd in the first round before losing to Newport Central Catholic. Last year, Holy Cross knocked out Carroll County in the opening round before falling to DeSales.

• This will be the Rebels’ third trip to the playoffs under the current alignment. It will also be their third different opponent. Owen County played DeSales in 2007 and took on Newport Central Catholic in 2008.

• In other playoff action on Friday night, DeSales will host Newport and Christian Academy of Louisville will host Lloyd.
