Two wins at Lloyd Tournament for Rebels

One might
think that the week between Christmas and New Year’s would
be a time for rest and relaxation. Not for Coach Duvall and
the Owen County Rebels. The team traveled north to take part
in the Lloyd Memorial Tournament in Erlanger where they played
four games in four days. The opponents included 9th Region foes
Boone County and Silver Grove as well as 8th Region rival South
Oldham. The Rebels also took on Magoffin County from the 15th
Region. The Rebels ended up going 2-2 in the tournament.
The first game saw Owen County go up against Boone County. The
Rebels from Florence were fresh off winning the Hoopin’
It Up Tournament in London, Kentucky the week before. Owen County
found themselves trailing 40-31 at intermission. The Rebels
would cut the deficit to six in the third quarter before Boone
County went on a 10-2 run to take control of the game. Boone
County eventually won 79-57. Collin Gamble scored 23 points
in the loss while Drew Marston added 13 points and Clint Hamilton
pitched in 10.
Less than 24 hours later the Rebels were back on the court against
the Big Trains from Silver Grove. Both teams were slow getting
on track with the Rebels trailing 9-7 at the end of the first
quarter. Silver Grove looked to push the tempo early, while
Owen County could not get shots to fall from anywhere on the
court. Owen County found some success in the second quarter
and took a 22-19 lead into the locker room. Owen County opened
up a six-point lead in the third quarter but Silver Grove then
scored the next seven points to take a one-point lead. The fourth
quarter was tightly contested. The Rebels took a five-point
lead but saw it disappear when Silver Grove’s Steven Pelle
scored the next five points to tie the game. Pelle would finish
the game with 27 points but it would be the three points he
did not score that will be remembered. Owen County was protecting
a 49-47 lead with 2.3 seconds to play as Silver Grove put the
ball into play. Pelle went to his right and forced up a three-pointer
that was partially blocked by Jordan Shelton. The officials
called a foul that sent Pelle to the foul line with no time
on the clock and three shots to win the game. Much to the excitement
of the Rebels, Pelle missed the first two and Owen County survived.
Owen County came out the next day and fell to South Oldham 58-47.
Owen County will get a chance to make amends for that loss when
they travel to South Oldham on Feb. 19. The Rebels closed out
the tournament by knocking off Magoffin County, 55-50.
Gamble led the Rebels in scoring by averaging 19 points a game.
Marston averaged 10 points over the course of those games while
grabbing four rebounds a contest. Shelton averaged eight points
and 10 boards while Clint Hamilton averaged seven points and
five rebounds.
