A charter
date for the Owen County Optimist Club was originally set for
tomorrow night.
With not enough members signed and paid to form a club, the charter
date has been moved to Dec. 6.
Judy Ziegler is the current President of the Optimist Club. The
former Owen Countian is trying to get the club started again.
Owen County had an Optimist Club until sometime in the late 1990s.
In the past couple of months, Ziegler and past International President,
Ronnie Dunn, have been holding informational meetings to try and
determine interest in re-forming a club in the area.
The meeting tomorrow night will now serve as another informational
meeting and one that will allow those members who have not signed
and paid yet to do so before the charter date.
Ziegler said around 10 people have signed up and paid to become
members of the club.
“Another 10 said they’d think about it,” she
said.
A total of 25 members are needed before the club can be chartered.
Ziegler hopes to get the club up and running as soon as possible
so a December project can be planned for local kids.
She said she believes some people are unsure about joining because
they think it takes up a lot of time.
The amount of time planning for and implementing projects is something
Ziegler said depends on the club.
“They may do something each month (or) every few months,”
she said.
Meetings in the past several weeks have been at the Smith House
restaurant, but will now move to the Owen County Public Library.
“If (people) come to the meeting, it doesn’t mean
they have to join,” Ziegler said. “It just lets them
know what the club’s about and what’s going on.”
Tomorrow’s meeting will be at the Owen County Public Library
at 6 p.m.
“We’d like for (everyone) to come out and hear what
we’re about,” Ziegler said. “It’s about
kids; they’re the future of the community.”
