Football
season ends for Rebels
It is over.
The 2007 Owen County football season has come to an end. The Rebels
finished the season with a 52-6 loss to the DeSales Colts in the
Class 2A Playoffs on Friday night in Louisville.
Much like in the first meeting between these two teams, the Colts
were able to open up a lead and then cruise to the win. DeSales
scored three times in the first quarter on short touchdown runs
to open up a 21-0 lead.

Rebels
take third at
King
of the Hill tournament
The Owen
County Parks & Recreation 8U and 10U football teams made their
annual trek to Owensboro over the weekend for the King of the
Hill Classic football tournament.
The tournament is held at the Waymond Morris Football Complex
and traditionally brings in teams from six or more states. The
8U team made a very strong showing, falling just short of the
championship game to bring home third place.
The 10U team fell just short in their first game and won their
second to finish 1-1 in pool play.

Second-place finish for Hoop
She was
hoping to win the sixth individual state championship for Owen
County High School in its history. Instead, Danielle Hoop, who
has become noticed by cross country coaches and fans throughout
the state, came up just short. The freshman finished just ten
seconds behind the winner, Kaitlin Snapp from Danville, for second
place at the State Cross Country Meet on Saturday at the Kentucky
Horse Park.
Hoop finished the 5K event in 19:08.83, which on any other day
may have been good enough to win. The only problem was, she was
going against Snapp who has been ranked No. 1 in the state for
the year and was the defending State Champion.
Coach Jeff Sutton said earlier last week that he felt like Danielle
had a shot to win the race on Saturday. He said that Danielle’s
finish a week ago at the Regional, where she also lost to Snapp,
has given her the confidence to know that she could compete with
the best runner the state had to offer.
Seventh-grader Julie Spaulding also ran in the race on Saturday.
She finished 119th out of 186 runners. Coach Sutton said last
week that he believed Spaulding had a chance to finish in the
top 125 and she did. He said the race would be a good experience
for his young runner. With the return next season of Hoop, Spaulding
and a pair of seventh-graders in Morgan Walker and Haley DeCandia,
Coach Sutton says he could have a very strong team when 2008 rolls
around. The coach said he believes that if everyone keeps improving,
his girls could compete to be one the best teams in the region
and the state.
In the boy’s race, Michael Kincaid wrapped up his career
by finishing 81st out of 197 runners. Coach Sutton thought Kincaid
was capable of finishing in the top 100 and the senior was able
to accomplish that goal.

Two locals play college basketball
Over the
next few days, the college basketball season will be in full swing.
Two people who will be actively involved in the season will be
Owen County graduates Kaylan Richardson and Daniel Neeley.
For Kaylan Richardson, the rigors of a college basketball season
are nothing new. The junior at Alice Lloyd College has begun her
third season playing for the Lady Eagles. Over the past two seasons,
Richardson has averaged 9.3 points a game. So far this season,
Richardson is averaging six points in two games. Her career high
came last season when she put in 25 points in a game against the
University of Virginia at Wise. During her freshman season she
played in 21 games and in her sophomore campaign she saw action
in 28 games.
While Richardson has experienced college basketball, for Daniel
Neeley this season will be something new. Neeley is entering his
first year playing for Coach Greg Mason and the Centre College
Colonels. Last year, Neeley help lead the Owen County Rebels to
a record of 21-6. Neeley will be joining a team that finished
24-5 a year ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division
III Tournament. Head Coach Mason was positive when asked about
the freshman. “He’s learning. His skill level is very
good.” Mason said Neeley was a natural point guard who was
in the perfect situation by getting to learn from a senior. The
coach went on to say, “I am happy to have him.”
