Forgotten hero with local ties
is
remembered
“Stand
aside, I’m coming through,” Vice Admiral Willis “Ching”
Lee Jr. said.
The commanders of the remaining U.S. Navy task force heard Lee’s
voice break through the static of their radios. This message marked
a key moment in the battle of Guadalcanal.
On the night of Nov. 14, 1942, Lee commanded two new battleships,
the USS Washington and the USS South Dakota. They joined the fight
intending to energize the battle-weary Navy. The attack at Pearl
Harbor weakened the Pacific Fleet and Lee was sent in as reinforcement.
The Japanese were trying to reinforce their troops on Guadalcanal.

Local veterans share stories from the wars in which they served.
Veterans
Day is a time that is set aside to say thank you to all those who
have served. Many take the opportunity to meet with friends and
share stories, while others would prefer to just forget. The importance
of Veterans Day is to send the message that we will not forget.
“I encourage all Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice
of our veterans through ceremonies and prayers,” President
Bush said in a press release on the White House Web site.
Everyone has a different way of looking at the world. For these
Owen County veterans, they all had different experiences and hold
different views. However, they all have one thing in common, service
in the United States Armed Forces.
