Rain comes back to town

BY: Laura Hagan

Last Thursday the rains came.
Sort of.
After a day of off and on rain and thunder, areas of the county ended up with anywhere from two to four inches of rain.
While it wasn’t nearly enough to help the county recover from the drought that has lasted all summer, it did do some good.
Kim Strohmeier, County Extention Agent for Agriculture, said the small amount of rain did put some water back into ponds.
“It helped people’s outlook some,” he said.
Strohmeier said it was not enough rain to get grass growing again or to provide feed supply, but that it “was a welcome relief.”
“It seems like most of it soaked in,” he said.
The drought may also be having an effect on foundations of homes.
Brandon Kemper of Kemper Homes, said that while too much water can be bad for foundations, no water is just as bad.
Kemper said that as the ground gets drier, cracks form, allowing water to get into the foundation.
“(The drought’s) been kind of tough,” Kemper said.
It rained again on Monday for a short time.
According to weather.com, Monday’s showers are not the last of the rain the county will see in the near future.
The Web site shows a 30-percent chance of showers for today, and a 60-percent chance Monday through Wednesday of next week.
