Owen
sweeps triple-header from Pendleton
The
Owen County Parks & Recreation competitive football teams
began their season last week in good fashion by winning all
three games against Pendleton County. Below is an account of
the day’s action.
Midget
Division
Owen
County 25
Pendleton County 6
The young
Rebels started this game with a little case of nerves as they
battled to a 0-0 first-quarter score. However, in the second
quarter the Rebels started to roll. Ty Smith posted the first
score when he rambled down the left sideline on a 52-yard touchdown
run. Kirby Young added the conversion to put the hometown boys
up 7-0.
On the
Rebels’ next possession Logan Harrod reversed a busted
play down the left side for a 57-yard scoring strike to put
the Rebels ahead 13-0.
In the
second half it looked as if Harrod had struck again when he
outran the Panthers defense down the right side-line for a 48-yard
score. However, the play was called back for a late hit. Two
plays later Young put the score back up for the Rebels when
he raced around the left side for a 37-yard touchdown run and
a 19-0 lead.
Later
in the half the Rebels got another score when Austin Brown busted
up the middle and broke free for a 43-yard touchdown to put
the Rebels up 25-0.
The Panthers
posted a late score for the final margin. In addition to the
Rebels offense, the strong defensive effort was lead by Blake
Duncan, Hayden McCowan, and Grant Smith, along with Smith, Young,
Harrod, and Brown.

The Mighty
Pro Rebels came out hitting on all cylinders in this match-up.
The offense had eight different players put numbers on the board,
and their defense caused and recovered five fumbles.
The defensive
work started early when Patrick Osborne recovered a fumble on
the Panthers first possession. Osborne took little time taking
advantage of the opportunity when he scored on a 15-yard run.
Tyler Hendricks added the conversion to put the Rebels up 7-0.
On the ensuing kick-off Osborne struck again when he scooped
up a fumble and rambled to the 2-yard line before he was drug
down.
On the
next play QB Nolan Tackett powered his way into the end-zone.
Austin Fitzgerald added the conversion for a 14-0 early lead.
Later
in the quarter Chandler Jones recovered a fumble to put the
Rebels’ offense back in business.
Hendricks
scored on an 8-yard sweep to give the Rebels a 20-0 advantage.
In the second quarter Austin Prather got into the recovery act
when he pounced on a fumble for the Rebels.
The Rebels
took full advantage of the opportunity when Vince Toftness raced
down the left sideline for a 27-yard touchdown run. Jones added
the conversion to send the Rebels in to halftime with a comfortable
27-0 lead.
In the
second half the Rebels started where they left off marching
down the field with an impressive drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown
blast by David Gray.
Jones
added the conversion for a 34-0 lead. Later in the half Garrett
Cobb made the Rebels’ fifth fumble recovery. Mason Borchers
got into the touchdown brigade with a 34-yard sweep around the
left side for a score. Gray added the conversion for the final
margin.
Power
House Division
Owen
County 7
Pendleton County 0
This
game was an old-school “three yards and a cloud of dust”
contest. Both of the teams’ defenses played so strong
that there were few “big plays” to report.
However,
the Rebels got just enough to win. Logan Webster came up with
a fumble recovery early on to help the Rebels defense stop the
Panthers.
Late
in the first half Austin Combs picked off a Panthers ‘pass
to give the Rebels possession. Combs later scored on a 2-yard
blast up the middle, and Logan Lowe added the conversion to
give the Rebels a 7-0 lead at the half.
In the
second half both teams battled back and forth with each team’s
defense not giving up much. The Panthers threatened to tie the
game up late, however, another fumble recovery by Webster thwarted
the drive.
The Rebels’
strong defensive charge was lead by Trevor Jones, Michael Wash,
Carson Williams, Tristen House, Webster, Combs, and Lowe.
