OCHS will make decision soon

By MAGGIE WILLIAMS

The SBDM council at Owen County High School has a couple of long days ahead of them. At their regularly scheduled Monday evening meeting, the council set a time line and discussed criteria for hiring a principal for the school.

Shannon Treece, assistant principal, is currently acting as principal in the wake of Tim Hitzfield’s resignation a week before school started. She has worked in the Owen County school district at both the middle and high schools.

The Site-based council will conduct phone interviews with five applicants tonight. The applicants’ responses and how well they meet the principal selection criteria will determine who is called in for face-to-face interviews tomorrow evening. Treece, who is not a member of the council, said she expects the council members to make a decision by the end of the week.

Even without a hired leader, Treece said the first few days of school have gone very well. The freshman center — a new initiative this year designed to help younger students transition into the high school — “rolled right along,” Treece said.

It is Treece’s hope that having freshmen separated from upperclassmen will encourage both groups of students to achieve to the best of their potential. “We want to raise expectations for upperclassmen,” she said.
