Owen County Elementary Art Committee recieves SCAPP Grant

Last year, to fulfill a need for long-term arts influence, the art committee applied for and received a SCAPP grant from the Kentucky Arts Council. SCAPP stands for School-Community-Arts-Parents Partnership. Qualifying organizations had to prove a strong community partnership and then participate in a plan development workshop. The committee is partnering with the Kentucky Arts Council, Elk Creek Vineyard, Owen County Public Library, Family Resource Center, Owen County Schools and the Michael Francis Zalla Foundation. It is a three-year grant and will bring $13,750 to the community.
The program’s goals are to make arts opportunities a constant element in local schools and to make arts events available and accessible on a regular basis to the community. By doing this the committee hopes to increase awareness and appreciation for the arts in Owen County. Programs have already started at both the elementary school and the primary school.
On Nov. 21, 2006, fifth-grade students spent the day reenacting a day in colonial America. Money from the SCAPP grant brought in Tom and Bonnie Strassel and their period printing press.

On Feb. 3, the Primary School hosted a “Make and Take” event. Students and their families made heart wreaths, one for the residents’ doors at Harborside Healthcare and one to take home. In March the elementary school will host five resident artists who will stay all week and work with every student in the school. On March 29, the committee will host “A Night With the Arts” featuring the students’ work.
Events are also planned for Elk Creek Vineyards, including an art exhibit by Alfredo Escabar starting Saturday, and Dick Albin performing at the Owen County Public Library at the end of the month.
All of these performances will be free and open to the public. This school year will end with the bi-annual arts Extravaganza on May 11.
The committee is putting together a roster of local artists which will be distributed to teachers, civic organizations and any other interested parties. It will be a compilation of local talent with descriptions of their work and contact information.
Work is currently under way on this project. Artist inclusions can be submitted by contacting Joan Goderwis at 484-3414 or Ellen Engelman at 484-2678.
