Bond wasn’t even planning on coming to the fair Wednesday
night.
She heard it might rain and didn’t feel like going out in
the hot weather either.
Her family asked her to come and watch her stepson in the Truck
and Tractor Pull, and when her son-in-law called and said he’d
buy her supper, she decided she might as well go.
She didn’t know that before the night was over, she’d
be named Owen County’s Mother of the Year.
During a short intermission in Wednesday night’s Miss Teen
Owen County Fair Pageant, the annual Mother of the Year and Owen
Countian of the Year awards were announced.
Jenny Coyle, president of the Fair Board, read a letter that was
written by one of Bond’s step-daughters. The letter talked
about Bond’s life and her influence on her children and
grandchildren’s lives.
Ann Bond has one son, Mike, from her marriage to her first husband,
J.D. Waldrop. When an accident left J.D. bedridden, Ann took care
of him until his death.
She later married Jimmy Bond, whose wife had died. Jimmy had four
children of his own.
Denise Humphreys is Bond’s youngest step-daughter and the
one who wrote the letter on Bond’s behalf.
“You can’t get too many step-children to say good
things (about their stepmother),” Bond said. “But
I’ve always treated them like my own.”
In the submission letter, Humphreys wrote, “I honestly have
come to think of her as my true mother. She has loved and supported
me through everything I’ve done, good and bad.”
Bond said the most important thing in her life is her family,
as evidenced by the number of family members there with her the
night she received the award. She is “the best one-woman
support system for her children, grandchildren, and other family
members,” Humphreys said.
Ann has some advice for all the mothers out there. She said to
always give the children a certain time to go home. She said to
be strict and know where they are at all times. This worked with
her own children and she said none of them ever talked back.
“Show them a lot of love,” she said, “and they’ll
know you support them.”
