Midsummer
Night's Market
Years ago,
Owenton on a Friday night was a lively, social place to be. Rumor
has it so many people came to town on Friday nights, they had to
park and walk for blocks to get to shopping or the movie theater
or friends on the corner.
This Friday evening, Owenton will come alive again as the Owen County
Farm and Craft Market presents “Midsummer Night’s Market”
from 6 p.m. to dark at the courthouse square. There will be live
local music, several food vendors, inflatables for the kids, cornhole
and arts and crafts, as well as the regular fresh-picked produce
and farmers’ market.
Food and fun
“Tomatoes, fresh-picked sweet corn, food, music, cornhole
and lots of neighbors ... what more could you ask for on a Friday
night? We think it will be family-oriented entertainment and a chance
for everyone to shop at the farmers’ market,” said organizer
Patty Petzinger. “We’re asking everyone to bring lawn
chairs and enjoy the food and entertainment,” she said. Larry
Ayres, president of the Owen County Farm and Craft Market, reported
that anyone who attends can expect to find these items for sale
from local farmers and artists: tomatoes, cantaloupe, green beans,
corn, cabbage, cucumbers, peppers, onions, eggplant, squash, watermelon,
herbs, live plants, homemade bread, cookies, jam, jewelry, blown
glass, photographs, children’s sundresses and accessories,
handmade soap and bodycare gifts, handmade signs and other art.
More entertainment
A new entertainer has been added to the list of musicians for the
evening. John Lawson, singer-songwriter from Frankfort, will bring
his own brand of down-home music to the stage. Other musicians on
the lineup include singer-songwriter Lauren Houston; the Brumback
Sisters; and the Downtown County Band featuring Wes Petzinger and
Keith Clifton from Owenton and Dan Atkins and Sam McWilliams from
Franklin County. Participants may register for the cornhole tournament
at the event or by contacting Billy Kemper after 6 p.m. at 484-3370
or 750-0578. The entrance fee is $20 for each two-person team, and
proceeds will be split among the top three winners. Streets around
the courthouse will be closed to traffic for the evening, and inflatables
will be set up for the children to enjoy.
Food, art work and farmers’ market fare
Beginning at 6 p.m., food vendors will provide everything from snacks
to meals. The Sparta Department Store will be serving ice cream
and sherbet along with meals. Hamburgers, hotdogs and other goodies
will also be available. Local artists will have booths set up to
display their work, and artists may call the Owen County Extension
Office at 484-5703 for details or to register. According to Veronica
Gayle and Sharon Lombardo, event coordinators, this event is being
held to thank the community for their support of the Owen County
Farm and Craft Market as well as make it possible for people who
are unable to attend during normal daytime hours to take advantage
of what the market has to offer. The hope is that if there is enough
enthusiasm from the community, evening markets can be held once
or twice every year.
