Lady Rebels play two

By BRIAN BLAIR

NH Correspondent

The Owen County Lady Rebels were in action twice this past week. The first was a home contest on Feb. 12 against Trimble County.
It may have been two nights before Valentine’s Day, but there was no love lost in this game. The Lady Raiders came into Owenton looking to exact revenge for an overtime loss to the Lady Rebels back at Trimble County earlier in the season.

Trimble County may have been wearing blue and yellow uniforms, but by the time the game was over both teams were black and blue. In a hard fought, physical game, it was Owen County coming away with the 42-39 win over the visitors from Trimble County.
While players from both teams probably had some bumps and bruises the next day, the player leaving the biggest mark was freshman, Jensen Wainscott. While scoring just four points in the first half, the freshman put in 13 points in the second half, including a span of eight straight points to finish the third quarter.
Wainscott then scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to cut the Trimble County lead to one. Kendall Cochran then nailed a three-pointer to give the Lady Rebels a 29-28 lead with 6:34 to play in the game.
The Lady Raiders were able to get the lead back and with four minutes to play held a four-point lead at 35-31. Eko Kemper then scored on a nice pass from Shea Green to cut the lead to 35-33 with 3:25 to play. One minute later, Trimble County’s Jesse Caudill fouled out. As she left the floor she said something to one of the officials that warranted a technical foul. Wainscott then stepped to the free-throw line and made three of four shots to give the Lady Rebels a 36-35 advantage.
The Lady Rebels held on to the lead and with less than a minute to play they were on top 38-37 when Kendall Cochran was fouled. She missed both free throws but Dani Hutchinson grabbed the rebound and got the ball back to Cochran who was fouled again. This time she sank both foul shots to give the Lady Rebels a three-point lead with 20 seconds left to play. Trimble County cut the lead back to one on a put-back by Morgan Dunlop with 7.6 seconds to go. Trimble County’s Rachel Barnes was then whistled for an intentional foul. The call led to another technical foul, this one on Trimble County head coach, Kerrie Stewart. As a result, it was more free throws for Cochran who sealed the 42-39 win for the Lady Rebels.
Wainscott’s 17 points led the Rebels. It was also a career high for the freshman.
After the game, Coach Osborne complimented Wainscott for her ability to handle Trimble County’s defensive pressure and for her own defense against the Lady Raiders ball handlers.
Cochran finished the game with 13 points. The Lady Rebels also got contributions from Kelsey Williams who scored four points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots. Kemper came off the bench scoring four points and pulling down five rebounds. Shea Green also scored four points.
Owen County then traveled to Walton-Verona for a Friday night match-up against the Lady Bearcats. The game proved to be another close contest but this time the Lady Rebels ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
While it may have been slow going on the roadways all week due to snow and ice, both teams ran up and down the court at a frantic pace for most of the game. After a back-and-forth first half, Owen County held a two-point halftime lead at 29-27. The second half saw both teams scoring runs only to see the other come back. The Lady Rebels held a six-point advantage early in the second half, but again the Lady Bearcats came back and tied it up. Owen County did manage to take a five-point lead into the fourth quarter. Walton then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to tie the score at 44 with seven minutes to play. The next two minutes saw the Lady Bearcats open up a five point lead of their own. The Lady Rebels chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 54-54 on a Wainscott three-pointer with three minutes to play.
The Lady Bearcats once again held a five-point lead after a Lauren Hargett layup with just under two minutes left. This time Green nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to two with 1:42 remaining. On the next Walton possession McKenzie Garcia’s put-back of a missed shot put the Lady Bearcats on top 62-58. Jensen Wainscott connected on her fifth three-point basket of the game to cut the lead to 62-61 with 55 seconds to play in the game. The Lady Bearcats then played keep-away until Ashley Bowling scored to give Walton a 64-61 lead with 13.6 seconds to play. The Lady Rebels were able to get the ball to Shea Green who got off a three-pointer that hit the rim at the buzzer

.
Wainscott again led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 19 points. Williams scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. She also had three blocks and three assists. Green tallied eight points while Cochran scored eight points, dished out eight assists and had three steals. Kemper pitched in with seven points and grabbed six rebounds. Lauren Lowe came off the bench to contribute five points and five rebounds. Emma Lowe finished the game with two points.
The Lady Rebels are now 13-11 on the season. They will wrap up the regular season at 6 p.m. Friday when they go on the road to play Grant County.

Rebels have a good week

By BRIAN BLAIR

NH Correspondent

After a long layoff due to winter weather, Owen County was back in action this past week. Their game against Trimble County scheduled for Feb. 13 was postponed due to the weather. The Rebels were able to play Williamstown at home on Thursday night and at Walton-Verona on Friday night. In both games the Rebels came out victorious.
Against Williamstown, the Rebels used a balanced offense to defeat the Demons 67-44. The Rebels got off to a sluggish start before Daniel Neeley knocked down a three-pointer two minutes into the game. Williamstown did not score until a Jacob Cheeseman free throw with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. The Rebels led 15-5 until Patrick Gatewood’s three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer. The Demons then outscored the Rebels 20-18 in the second quarter, including another three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Rebels’ lead to 33-28 at intermission.
That would be as close as the Demons would get. Owen County outscored Williamstown 34-16 in the second half for the win. Most of the damage came in the paint as the Rebels had little trouble breaking down the Demon defense. The Rebels also stepped up their own defense as they limited the Demons to just five second-half field goals.

Jared Perkins led the way for the Rebels with 24 points. He also had four rebounds. Neeley had 18 points. Neeley also dished out seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Jordan Downey tallied 15 points and snagged seven steals. Perkins and Downey admitted afterwards they were a little rusty after the long layoff. Downey said it felt like playing the first game of the season all over again. After the game Coach Duvall said the Rebels were a little stale and their timing was a little bit off. He was pleased with the team’s defensive effort in the second half.
Danny O’Toole scored four points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots against Williamstown. Clint Hamilton, Zack Miller and Collin Gamble each scored two points.
On Friday night the Rebels went on the road to take on Walton-Verona. The Rebels opened up the game by scoring the first seven points and led 16-10 after one quarter. Owen County began the second quarter by scoring 10 consecutive points to break the game open and lead 26-10. The lead at the half had ballooned to 36-18. Neeley paced the Rebels in the first 16 minutes by scoring 18 points.
The second half proved more challenging. The Bearcats came out of the lockerroom and began to claw their way back into the game. Walton’s Scott Kirk scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Bearcats outscored the Rebels 20-11 in the quarter. The third quarter also saw Neeley leave the game for a few minutes after he received a cut over his left eye. Neeley said after the game the cut occurred when he bumped heads with Zach Miller. Neeley would return to the game wearing a patch just over the eye.

As the fourth quarter began, Walton trailed by nine. The Bearcats then put together four quick points, and the Rebels connected on a free throw and the lead had been trimmed to 48-42 with 6:55 to play. The Bearcats were unable to cut the lead further. The Rebels maintained the lead, making enough free throws down the stretch. Neeley was held to just one basket in the second half but he connected on nine of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to propel the Rebels to the victory. Neeley finished the game with 29 points, five assists and five steals. Miller scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. O’Toole tossed in 10 points and brought down eight boards. Perkins finished the game with eight points, nine rebounds and four steals. Downey scored six points and Collin Gamble had one point.
With the two victories the Rebels improve to 15-4 on the season. Their next game will be Friday night in Dry Ridge when the Rebels take on Grant County in the regular season finale.

Tourney Time is Here

By Brian Blair

The classic Christmas carol says “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The writer of the song apparently never experienced the Kentucky State Basketball Tournament.
The boys and girls 31st District Tournament gets under way next week at Henry County. The girls will be in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they take on Gallatin County. The first game will feature Carroll County and Henry County which begins at 6 p.m. It will be the fourth meeting this year between the Lady Rebels and the Lady Wildcats. Owen County has won the previous three, including a semifinal win in the 8th Region All “A” Classic. The winner of the game will advance to the championship game at 7 p.m. March 2.
