Lady Rebels split a pair

For Owen County, the last two games have produced positive results. In one the Lady Rebels were victorious and in the other they took the third-ranked team in the 8th Region to the wire.
On Feb. 3, the Lady Rebels defeated Williamstown 57-32 in Williamstown. Coach Osborne saw eight Lady Rebels crack the scoring column, led by Eko Kemper with 17 points. She also pulled down nine rebounds. Shea Green tossed in 15 points while Kendall Cochran contributed eight points and six steals. Kelsey Williams played a solid game and finished with five points, 14 boards and four blocked shots. Jensen Wainscott finished with five points and four assists. Emma Lowe had three points while Dani Hutchinson and Emile Davis each scored two points. It was the second time this season the Lady Rebels had defeated the Lady Demons. Owen County won the previous meeting 53-36 in Owenton back on the first day of December.
On Thursday, the Lady Rebels welcomed the Lady Bearcats of Anderson County to Owenton. The first quarter proved to be tight, with Anderson County on top 9-7 after eight minutes.
Midway through the second quarter, Owen County found themselves down 18-9. That is when the Lady Rebels went to work. Kelsey Williams scored six points in the second quarter to help bring the Lady Rebels back. Right before the half, Wainscott played beat-the-buzzer and knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Lady Braves’ lead to 22-20 at intermission.
In the third quarter, Green scored on back-to-back three-pointers to give the Lady Rebels a 26-25 lead. Owen County went on to outscore Anderson County 11-8 in the third to take a 31-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bearcats scored the first points of the quarter to go on top 32-31. It was a lead they would never give back. They extended the lead to 40-35 on a Lindsey Fultz baseline jumper halfway through the quarter.
The Lady Rebels were able to cut the lead to two after Williams’ free throw at 40-38. The Lady Rebels would get no closer. Anderson County finished the game by outscoring Owen County 9-3 to win the game 49-41.
Coach Osborne said after the game the girls “played well enough to win.” He talked about the fact that the Lady Rebels were not able to convert down the stretch while the Lady Bearcats did. He gave credit to Anderson County saying they showed why they are one of the best teams in the 8th Region. Osborne said he told the team in the locker room after that game he was “not happy with the loss, but happy with the effort.” With the loss they saw their record fall to 12-10.
The Lady Rebels will be busy over the next few days. They were scheduled to play a make-up game this past Monday with Trimble County. Then on Friday they will travel to Walton to take on the Lady Bearcats. The game will follow the boy’s game between Owen County and Walton-Verona. The Lady Rebels will then return home for Senior Night on Monday when they host Spencer County.

Rebels snowed out

By BRIAN BLAIR

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. If that’s the case, the next time Coach Duvall’s Rebels take the court for a real game will be a welcome occurrence. When their next game does happen it will be the first time in two weeks the Rebels have seen game action. Owen County’s last game was Jan. 30 when they played at Eminence. The Rebels were scheduled to play Trimble County last night, weather permitting.
They may not have played a game during that span, but they were busy. The Rebels had two weeks of practice that even included a simulated game complete with timeouts. Assistant Coach T.J. Wesselman said the game was necessary to keep the team sharp. He said the game gave the guys a chance to get the feel of playing in a game as opposed to just practicing.
Wesselman also said the time off gave Daniel Neeley a chance to rest his injured heel.
Getting back to game action will be a welcome sight for two Rebels. Zack Miller and Danny O’Toole both said they were ready to get back to playing real games. Both said practice had been going well, but they were ready to go against someone other than their own teammates.
Miller and O’Toole will get their wish unless Old Man Winter prevents it. Owen County will play three games in four days including last night’s game at Trimble County. On Thursday the Rebels will welcome Williamstown and then on Friday they will travel up I-71 to take on the Bearcats of Walton-Verona. The Rebels then return home for Senior Night Tuesday when they play host to South Oldham.
While the Rebels may not have played a game of late, it did not mean their achievements this season went unnoticed. Coach Duvall along with Neeley and Jared Perkins made an appearance under the bright lights of the television cameras. The trio represented the team this week on the Scholastic Ball Report on WKYT-TV in Lexington. Coach Duvall and the players were named Coach and Team of the Week. When asked about the success of the team this year, Coach Duvall credited senior leadership both on and off the floor. Perkins spoke about the fact that this group of seniors has been playing since middle school and everyone knows their roles. Neeley gave credit to the Rebel fans for coming out to the games and supporting the team. He later sounded liked an accomplished analyst as he broke down the upcoming 8th Region Tournament.
