The News-Herald published its seventh annual June Dairy Month
newspaper.
Fifteen Owen County females will compete in the June Dairy Day
celebration June 22. A $25 cash prize will be awarded to the June
dairy princess. Candidates for dairy princess must be 16 to 24
years of age, single, a high school graduate and have some dairy
background. Judging will be based in part on healthy appearance,
natural attractiveness, dairy background, knowledge of dairy farm,
and public speaking ability.
Plans for extensive experiments in dairying, with special studies
directed at the use of home-grown forage, will be under way at
the new 900-acre Eden Shale test farm near Sweet Owen. O.D. Hawkins
manages the farm.
R.O. Ball and Son operates a successful 20-cow dairy operation
on 185 acres on Worthville R-1. This is the third generation that
has been on the farm in 49 years.
Premarital blood tests are necessary to detect for syphilis. Tests
must be conducted within 15 days prior to the application for
a marriage license.
Births
Raleigh Curtis was born June 10 to Mrs. and Mrs. Hayde Link of
New Liberty.
Jeffrey Wyatt was born June 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gibson
of Owenton.

County news
A lone gunman, armed with a .25 caliber automatic pistol, robbed
Morgan & Thomas Drug Store at approximately 4:30 p.m. June
13. Taken were approximately 700 percodan and 300 dilauded tablets,
with a street value of $15,000.
A total of 202 families received a combined total of 2,500 pounds
of cheese distributed by the Salvation Army.
The state Department of Transportation has approved $242,698 for
Owen rural secondary road maintenance and improvements, including
the bituminous sealing of 2.6 miles of two county highways.
The Ed Ashcraft Companies office has just moved from upstairs
in the Simpson & Kelly Building to the Ashcraft residence
on Eden Shale Farm Raod.
Deaths
Ersel L. Slater, 71, died June 8 at home. Burial was in Bluegrass
Memorial Gardens in Lexington.
Mildred Perkins Dyer died June 12 from cancer. Burial was in Morgan
Cemetery in Pendleton County.

County news
The entire county budget for 1997-1998 includes four funds —
general, road, jails and ROOTS — and totals nearly $2.8
million.
Three Owen County natives — Courtney Wilhoite, Ronnie Jump
and Peggy Jump Williams — had roles in the Bluegrass Theatre
Guild’s production of Joseph Stern’s “Fiddler
on the Roof” in Frankfort.
Deaths
Grace Louise Vincent, 75, died June 11 of natural causes at her
residence. Burial was at New Columbus Cemetery.
Ida Lou Easton Woodie, 89, died June 4, after an extended illness.
Burial was in Warsaw Cemetery.
Dolly Miles, 78, died June 12 in Indiana. Burial was in Carrollton
IOOF Cemetery.
Irene Lilly, 76, died June 13 in Grant County. Burial was in Poplar
Grove Cemetery in Glencoe.
A memorial service in honor of Benjamin Perkins will be held June
21. Perkins died March 30. The Perkins family was on a work assignment
in Africa at the time of Benjamin’s death. |
