The Owenton Police Department, in a joint effort with the Sheriff’s Department, State Police and Probation and Parole, made a few house calls Thursday night.
Around 9 p.m. the officers headed out to several houses to check for drug possessions. The residents of the homes in question were on probation, and subject to a search by the officers.

Celebrating

Father's Day

Dad remembered for Christian faith,

lasting legacy

By Glypie Grider
Staff Writer

Sunday’s going to be hard for Mark Bess.
It’s the first Father’s Day since his dad, Kenneth, died.
“I’ve been thinking about my dad a good bit lately,” Mark admitted. “This Father’s Day is going to be tough, but I temper that because I know my dad was a wonderful guy.”

Car tax should come back to county

By Laura Hagan

New car buyers may be keeping tax money out of Owen County, and they might not realize it.
With no new-car dealerships in Owen County, residents wanting to buy new automobiles have to go outside the county. When doing so, however, they end up registering their car in the county where they bought the car.

Band with local ties rooted in jug,

and folk styles

pen at Elk Creek Vineyards

It seems to be a recipe for success.
Take an acoustic guitar, and add a fiddle, mandolin and banjo for good measure.
Dab some blues here, a little jug music there. Toss in some folk, and maybe a pinch of 1920s upbeat tunes — just for fun.
Throw in four boys.
Age for about 10 months, and let it go.
That’s the story of The Downtown County Band, a four-member string ensemble featuring the talents of two Owen County boys and two from neighboring Franklin County.

Taking the steps

to find a cure

– Photos by LAURA HAGAN
The 10th annual Owen County Relay for Life took place from Friday at 7 p.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m. More than $75,000 was raised, surpassing the goal of $72,000 set by the steering committee when they began meeting early this year. Twenty-two teams were set up around the track, with team members taking turns walking the track throughout the night. Of the over 100 survivors in Owen County, 58 walked the first lap. Later, the entire field was dark except for the light from luminaries bought in honor or in memory of loved ones with cancer. For more photos from the night, see page 23.
