The Owenton Chamber of Commerce started preparations for the annual
June Dairy Day which was slated to feature a number of Brown Swiss
cows marching to the music of the Owen County High School band.
One thousand small Kentucky bass were released into Eagle, Cedar
and Big Twin creeks. This was the first time local streams were
stocked with this type of fish. Fishing in these streams should
improve in a year.
The city of Owenton awarded a contract to Vallie Wainscott of
$15,653 to construct a new two-story city hall.
Davis-Gaines Motor company won the bid for the cruiser at $1,784
on a 1957 Ford.
Mrs. Ann Sander opened a new store, Ann’s Shoppe, in Owenton.
Births
Patricia Carroll was born May 27 to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hodge of
Frankfort.
Nicholas Spencer was born June 1 to Mr. and Mrs. John House of
Stamping Ground.
Deaths
Mrs. Ed Thornton, 77, died May 30. Survivors include three daughters,
Mrs. Arthur Porter, Mrs. Carrie Hughes and Mrs. Gertie Porter;
a son, Charlie; a sister, Mrs. Susan Arnold; and a brother, Neal
Gilles. Burial was in Monterey Cemetery.
Mrs. Euthema Dillon Taylor, 53, died May 30. Survivors were her
husband, Gusta Taylor; two daughters, Mrs. Jean Mardis and Miss
Moldea Taylor; a son, L.C. Taylor; and three brothers; J.C. Perkins,
Floyd Perkins and Robert Perkins. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery
at Dry Ridge.
Mrs. Allie Sharp White, 74, died May 29. Survivors were her daughters,
Mrs. William True and Mrs. Richard Lenning; and a brother, M.O.
Sharp. Burial was in Corinth IOOF Cemetery.
Mrs. Alice Souder, 81, died June 1. Survivors include three sons,
Willie, Kirley and Herman; a daughter, Mrs. G.P. Covert; and two
sisters, Mary Catherine Johnson and Mrs. Betty Kelley. Burial
was in Hillcrest Cemetery at Dry Ridge.

Slightly less than 10 percent of Owen’s voters expressed
their preference in the June 1 primary election.
The “Young at Heart Club” met at Martha Traylor’s
home for its May meeting. There was a motion by Mary Kate and
a second motion by Kathleen “to go to the Smith House or
somewhere else to eat and have our monthly meeting” unless
someone especially felt up to having a meal in their home.
Joy Charlene Arnold received her doctor of dental medicine degree
from the University of Kentucky on May 8.
Birth
Lindsey Ruth was born May 17 to Becky and Donald Duvall of Long
Ridge.
Deaths
Mrs. Mae Webster Turner, 75, died May 26. She is survived by a
son, two brothers and two sisters. Burial was in Jonesville Cemetery.
Mrs. Gracie Lee Bell, 82, died May 24 after a short illness. Survivors
were her husband, two daughters, a son and two stepsons. Burial
was in Henry County, Ind.
Beckham Clifton, 81, died May 25 following a long illness. He
is survived by his wife, four sons, three daughters and a brother.
Mrs. Ann Lillian Crouch Bond, 63, died May 31 after a long illness.
She is survived by a sister-in-law and a niece, Mrs. Lind Gunter.
Burial was in New Liberty IOOF Cemetery.
Roscoe Pyles, 82, died May 30 at his home following a long illness.
Survivors were his wife, Mrs. Louise Morris Pyles; and a daughter,
Mrs. Carol Ann Prather. Burial was in Carrollton Cemetery.
Charles R. Purnell Sr., 74, died May 27. He was survived by his
wife, Nellie Purnell; five sons, Bill, Raymond Jr., Jerry, Edward
and Lawrence; a stepson, Charles; three daughters, Anna Belle
Flynn, Mary Wessling, Darlene Barnes; a step-daughter, Vertie
Jump; two sisters, Kathleen Ross and Florida Gould. Burial was
in Clarks Creek Cemetery in Dry Ridge.
Jay Shelton, 74, died May 22 in Carrollton. He is survived by
four brothers, Roy, Frank, Harold and Ralph; and two sisters,
Louise Jett and Josephine Dandrea. Funeral services and burial
were held May 24 in Carrollton.

John Newcomb and Josh Smith were named co-valedictorians of the
Owen County High School Class of 1997, while John Combs earned
salutatorian honors. Frank Downing, President and CEO of Owen
Electric Cooperative, delivered the Commencement address to the
109 graduating seniors.
Bob Risch opened Woods and Water Supply on Hwy. 330.
The Board of Education finished interviewing five applicants for
superintendency. Brady Link, a former OCHS principal, was the
only familiar face among the list of candidates.
Birth
Katlin Sierra Payton was born to Sue Ann and Nicholas Payton on
April 17.
Deaths
Dorothy “Dot” McFarland, 71, died May 31 at her home.
She was survived by her husband, a daughter, two sons, a sister
and seven grandchildren. Burial was at Georgetown Cemetery.
Jeffery Scott Proctor, 27, died May 31. He is survived by his
parents, two daughters, a son, two brothers, and four sisters.
Burial was in Warsaw Cemetery.
Maybelle Smith Nevils, 65, died June 1 after an extended illness.
She is survived by a son, the Rev. Micheal Nevils; two daughters,
Delores Hill and Caroline Frazier; two sisters, Mary Taylor and
Katie B. Smith; and a brother, William Gayle Smith. Burial was
at Warsaw Oddfellows Cemetery.
Carroll D. Clements, 65, died May 27 of injuries resulting from
a motor vehicle accident. He was survived by his wife, Pauline
Clements; three sons, Gary, Dean and Brian; three daughters, Gayle
Booth, Judy Smith and Paula Clements; a brother, Dr. Fred Clements;
a sister, Evelyn Garrett; and a stepmother, Alma Clements. Burial
was at Bagdad Cemetery. |
