OCHS English class documented on field trip relating to slavery

After studying a unit on slavery, Mrs. Beverly’s English classes went to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on May 18. Prior to going on the field trip we researched hate groups, past- and modern- day slavery, and read Uncle Tom’s Cabin; the majority of us got the general idea of how cruel slavery was, but it wasn’t until after we were given a tour through the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center that we finally understood the severity of slavery.
Our tour guide, Eddie, told us numerous interesting facts about slavery. One being that 75 percent of all Caucasians have relatives of the African American race. Another fact is, 11 out of 15 of our first United States presidents were slave owners. Eddie cautioned us to watch who we look up to.
A misconception that was brought to our attention about Ohio was that it was a free state. Many of us assumed a free state meant slavery was not tolerated in that specific state. However, residents could still rent slaves to work on their plantation, without technically being a slave owner.
Through watching three videos and an interpretation of a preacher as a slave, we began to realize how often families were torn apart, as if they had no value. This made us appreciate our freedom and our rights as citizens even more.
We interviewed two students who also attended the field trip and asked them the following four questions: “Was the field trip beneficial to your education? Why or why not? What was your favorite part of the museum? Would you recommend others to visit the museum?” Nick Kelly replied, “Yes, it was beneficial because it brought everything to a close perspective and showed light on everything visually rather than reading from text.” His response to the second question was, “I liked the room that was blue and looked as if we were under water, because there was slave ship names engraved in the wall.” Nick also said he highly recommends others to visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
We also interviewed Kayla New. Her response was, “Yes, the field trip was beneficial to me because I didn’t get the full affect until I saw it visually.” She added, “My favorite part of the field trip was the slave pen.” She too recommends others to visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
Our last interview was Debra Arey, a chaperone who went on the trip with us. We asked her what the most interesting thing that she learned, and if she would recommend others to go to the museum. Her answer was, “The thing that intrigued me the most was that our African-American tour guide, Eddie, took a DNA test to see what part of Africa he came from. He soon found out that his great-great-great-great grandfather was a historical Caucasian slave owner.” Debra also answered, “I too highly recommend others to visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. In fact, it should be a requirement.”
Eddie, along with other staff members, complimented our group numerous times. He informed us that we were a few steps ahead of all the other groups that have been through the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Because of this, our group was video taped throughout the entire tour for a documentary on the Freedom Center. After our tour, the following students were privately interviewed due to the group’s obvious level of knowledge and articulate comments during a question-and-answer session: Timothy Fox, Amanda Perkins, Kristen Haines, Kendall Cochran and Jordan Bradford.
We would like to say a special thanks to Mrs. Beverly for allowing us to represent Owen County in the best possible way. If you are looking to learn more about present- and modern-day slavery, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is the place to go.
