Fiscal Court members debate magistrate funds

What was proposed:
During last week’s Fiscal Court meeting, members discussed the 2008 budget, including pay rates for county employees.
The magistrates
Magistrates considered increasing wages for county employees by 3 percent and allowing magistrates to receive $300 monthly for travel.
The judge-executive
The judge-executive suggested increasing county employees’ wages by 5 percent and said he felt a 3-percent increase sent county workers “the wrong message.”

Budget issues were one of the main topics of discussion during last week’s Fiscal Court meeting.
The first reading of the 2007-2008 Budget Ordinance #154 was done. The ordinance outlined how much of the budget went to each county employee and what it was used for — like salaries, bonds and travel.

Acting director expects to squeak by

The Owenton Housing Authority is in a financial pinch, but the acting director says she expects the agency to make it through the end of the fiscal year breaking close to even. Also, the board that regulates the housing authority is currently looking for ways to manage its money more effectively in the future.

As more companies make moves to provide wireless broadband in Owen County, Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion said Fiscal Court has put on hold the notion of establishing a county-funded wireless project.
And residents will likely soon have at least a couple of options for wireless broadband service in the county.

This week, Harborside Healthcare is rteasuring our elders.”
Mother’s Day marked the beginning of a week-long, annual celebration for those residents and staff of the nation’s nursing homes.
May 13 through 19 is National Nursing Home Week and “Treasure Our Elders” is this year’s theme.
The week of celebration is promoted by the American Health Care Association and the Kentucky Association of Healthcare Facilities (KAHCF).



Illegal dump cleared on Old Landing

Lexington contractor hauled off more than 32 tons of trash from site

Laborers spent nearly 700 hours in April and May cleaning up an illegal dump site on Old Landing Road. The cleanup was funded by a state grant and cost more than $57,000.

From April 9 to May 2, workers from MCM Trucking, based out of Lexington, spent more than 700 hours removing waste from the site.
