Develop healthy

eating habits

Judy Hetterman
County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Science

It’s important to teach children early how to develop healthy eating habits. Children as young as two years old should eat a diet rich in foods such as breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables. These foods provide essential vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates for energy and fiber. Fiber may reduce the risk of developing heart disease and some types of cancer later in life.

Art Extravaganza
is Friday night

By LAURA HAGAN

ach of the schools in Owen County will be on display Friday night.
The third-biennial Art Extravaganza begins at 6 p.m. at Owen County Elementary School.
The event began in 2003, the same year an arts committee was formed in the county. The committee has since taken part in an “Arts Week,” that took place in late March. During the week, students learned about drama, dance, music, art and storytelling.
Also during the week, posters were made to display around town highlighting the Art Extravaganza.
Ellen Engelman started the Owen County Elementary School Arts Committee. The idea came after she attended the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership. Working with art teacher Mrs. Michaels and then elementary school principal Rob Stafford, she designed a project that would improve the arts at the elementary school.
“It was such a hit the first year,” Engelman said. “350 people were there.”
In previous years, Owen County Primary School did not participate. Now that they have an art teacher, primary school students have submitted artwork to be displayed. The middle school has also just acquired a full-time art teacher, allowing them to be represented at the event as well.
OCHS students will have artwork displayed, as will 10 local artists.
Engelman encourages members of the community to attend.
They will be able to see the talent showcased by the students and adults in the county.
Displays will be set up throughout Owen County Elementary on Friday night, with an ongoing recital in the gym. The recital will feature a piano, guitar, fiddle and vocalist.
The event is free and open to the community.
Door prizes and refreshments will be offered. The event lasts until 8 p.m.
