Georgia: On My Mind

Georgia Green Stamper

My husband and I are closing in on forty years of marriage, a milestone our children and many of our contemporaries find amazing.
“What’s your secret?” they ask as though we were one hundred years old and had happened upon a patent-worthy tonic.

Staying dry during April showers

Judy Hetterman
County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Science

Staying dry is important, but what does it mean when the clothing label says water resistance verses waterproof? For those who have to brave the elements this spring, here is what’s important.

Kincaid inducted into Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Owenton inducted a new member on April 16, 2007. Joan Kincaid, Owen County Clerk, becomes the eleventh female to become a member of the local club in its 81-year history. The organization began admitting women worldwide in 1989 and now has more than 145,000 women in its ranks today.
When the current president, David “Milkweed” Wotier, was asked about Ms. Kincaid’s qualifications for membership he said, “Joan has long been an integral part of our community. She has worked behind the scenes for years in the County Clerk’s Office; now she is further proving to be an effective leader. Her experience and devoted work ethics make her a valuable asset to our community and fortifies the ideals of Rotary International.”
For more information about membership in Rotary, contact Milkweed at 750-2935.

Gardening events have begun

Tips from the Weekend Gardener

Jeneen Wiche

The garden event calendar

begins with the opening of most of our local farm markets this weekend. The vegetable offerings may be slim to begin with but spring crops like greens, lettuces and asparagus are available; plus the perennials, meats, cheeses, eggs, and jams (among other value-added home grown products) will be ready for a place at your table. For a complete listing and contact info for farm markets in Kentucky, visit The Kentucky Department of Agricultures Web site at www.Kyagr.com and search for “Farmer’s Market Directory;” for Indiana, visit the Office of the Commission of Agriculture’s site at www.In.gov/oca and click on “Farm Markets and U-Pick.”
Other events to take note of this year include garden tours and festivals. New gardeners frequently ask about the additional resources for continuing education, these are the events that deliver. You will see great plants, people and products; and get to mingle with the gardeners who do it in the process.
Yew Dell Gardens hosts their Plant Sale and Garden Market, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. April 28 and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. April 29. The 33-acre botanical garden, which was the home and nursery of renowned plantsman Theodore Klein, is located in Crestwood and has a collection of plants that is second to none. For details visit www.yewdellgardens.org or call (502) 241-4788.
The Louisville Area Iris Society’s annual show is April 28 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2822 Frankfort Avenue, in Louisville. It’s open to the public from 1 - 5 p.m. Plants and expert advice on many different species of iris will be available.
The 28th is a busy day, and in my neck of the woods gardeners will be visiting the annual Shelby County Garden and Art Fair held at the Shelby County Fair Grounds just off U.S. 60. You’ll find plants, art, food and music from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
One of the area’s nicest outdoor shows is the Locust Grove Gardener’s Fair, always hosted over Mother’s Day weekend, which is May 11-13 this year. The show offers a beautiful, historical setting and top notch vendors. Locust Grove is located on Blankenbaker Lane off Brownsboro Road.
The Beechmont Festival of Flowers is also held this weekend. On Saturday, May 12, you’ll find plants and vendors lining the lane just off Southern Parkway.
Madison in Bloom offers up garden tours during the weekends of May 12-13, and 19-20. The tour includes private gardens in Madison, Ind., and a special art exhibit on the 13th, “Painting Indiana: The Changing Face of Agriculture.” Visit www.visitmadison.org for details.
Country Thyme Friends Garden Club is hosting a “Secret Garden Luncheon” May 19 in Henryville, Ind., at the Wooded Glen Conference Center. The event opens at 9 a.m. with exhibits, vendors and demonstrations for gardeners and ends by 2 p.m. after a luncheon. I will be presenting a program on “Healthy soil, healthy plants, healthy environment” during lunch. For details or reservation please call (812) 967-6322.
The growing popularity of gardening is undeniable: all events will not fit in one column. I’ll continue with the calendar next week, in the meantime call some friends and make a date for a garden tour or two.
