The 4-H Livestock Club

on April 7, in Lexington. The competition is divided into three
age groups – clover, intermediate and seniors. Those participating
from Owen County in the clover division included Dalton Mears

and Chelsey True. Kyle Kelly and Megan Minch were in the senior

The Skill-A-Thon competition is divided into two categories –
Identification and Evaluation. The Identification classes had
to identify 20 breeds of goats, cattle, swine, and sheep, 20 pieces
of livestock equipment, 20 retail meat cuts, 20 feedstuffs and
20 external parts of livestock. The Evaluation classes consisted
of placing two classes of four hays, two classes of four retail
meat cuts, placing a class of four animals based on EDPs, and
answering 10 questions related to common livestock calculations
such as how to determine the break-even point when raising livestock
or finding the feed cost per pound of gain.
In the individual Identification classes, Sawyer Williams placed
sixth and Patrick Jansen placed seventh in the Intermediate division.
The Intermediate team of Williams, Jansen, Kelsey Johnson and
Morgan Forsee placed third.
In the individual Evaluation classes, Williams placed first and
Jansen placed sixth in the Intermediate division. The Intermediate
team of Williams, Jansen, Forsee and Samantha Perkins placed second.
In the overall individual rankings, Williams placed fourth and
Jansen placed sixth in the Intermediate division. The Intermediate
team of Williams, Jansen, Forsee and Perkins placed third overall.
In the Senior division, Megan Minch placed eighth as an individual
in the Evaluation division.
There were more than 150 youth that participated in the competition.
The Livestock Club met weekly in preparation for the competition.

Owen County Elementary School students
participated
in an Entrepreneur Fair on April 2. The students had been studying
economics and got the chance to get some business experience.
From
classroom to boardroom, entrepreneurs emerge.
The fifth-grade students at Owen County Elementary school had
their first Entrepreneur Fair April 2. The Entrepreneur Fair was
the culminating activity following a study of economics. It provided
a realistic opportunity for students to apply economic principles
and gain firsthand business experience. The students experienced
the risk and rewards of owning a business. They identified how
economic factors such as resources, goods, services, consumers,
supply, demand, price, cost, sales, profit, record-keeping, salesmanship,
market, advertising, credit, interest, time, space, and location
affect a business.

The students
identified the benefits and risks of a partnership versus sole
proprietorship. They experienced profit as an incentive for a
business owner and determined the cost of space for a business.
Also, they demonstrated the understanding that a loan is borrowed
money to be repaid with interest. The first Entrepreneur Fair
was a great success and hopefully, will be an annual event.
