EDUCATION

I pledge my hands to larger service

By: Cathy Jansen

I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world. This is the 4-H pledge.
Dedicating one’s hands to the betterment of others is a major component of the pledge that every 4-H’er takes. By jumping in to lend a hand to an individual or a group, 4-H’ers not only can improve someone else’s life, but also learn how they can make a real difference in the world. The experience gained in 4-H community service projects fosters understanding and acceptance of different viewpoints and cultures, as well as develops lifelong leadership skills.
As children grow into adolescents and then into adults, it’s important for their development that their experiences move beyond those of family and school. By becoming involved in the larger community, members acquire skills that prepare them to enter the work force, and teach them the adaptability they’ll need as they move through life.
4-H provides many opportunities for young people to connect not only with their local communities, but also with the larger world beyond their homes. They learn that it truly is better to give than to receive. Experiencing the feeling of generosity is vital in the development of any young person. Through 4-H service projects, members learn empathy, compassion and the importance of sharing.
Here in Owen County, we have many types of 4-H clubs, including Horse, Livestock and Shooting Sports. There are multiple opportunities for each of these groups to use their skills and develop new ones while benefiting others. Currently, 4-H members are involved in the TAPP initiative.  An important ingredient in successful community service projects is the partnerships formed between Cooperative Extension, 4-H and individuals, businesses, schools, other community groups and local government. One of the lessons a 4-H member learns is that nothing can be accomplished in a void which is why working in tandem with others often produces profound results.
With Spring in the air, this is a great time to be thinking about ways to do community service projects. Helping the elderly pick up sticks in their yard or picking up trash along the roadways or around the parks would be a great project to do during Spring Break. Beyond the local community, members who become involved in 4-H at the state or national level also have opportunities for service projects. Delegates to the National 4-H Congress, an annual meeting of selected 4-H members from across the country, have supported with their dimes the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home in Atlanta. In five years, the delegates have contributed $50,000 toward the home that’s known as Clover House.
In Kentucky, the state 4-H teen council has been working on a number of service projects, including making more than 300 fleece pillows and 50 blankets for the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital, filling baby bottles with change to benefit a single mother’s support group in Mercer County, and cleaning up nearly 10 miles of Kentucky roadways.
For more information about how you can become involved in 4-H or how your group or business can collaborate with 4-H in community service, contact the Owen County Extension Service at 484-5703.
Educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability or national origin.

KJHS enters exhibits in convention

By Tori Allen
KJHS reporter

On February 28, the Kentucky Junior Historical Society (KJHS) had another great meeting. We spent this time talking about the exhibits we entered in the Kentucky Junior Historical Society convention in Frankfort. Mrs. Trinkle and Mrs. Riley said we did a great job on the projects, and they were proud of us. They also agreed that just by reading our paragraphs that went along with the projects, they learned new things about Kentucky and Owen County. Some students shared what they learned while doing their exhibit, which was also interesting. Mrs. Riley told the class that next year we will need to turn in our projects earlier so that she and Mrs. Trinkle can make sure we have everything perfect. We received a Kentucky Heritage book that had all the names of the winners in the convention last year. When the book comes out next year, everyone hopes to see Owen County names in it. Our group also got KJHS newsletters that tell us about events that are going on. The KJHS members would like to thank Doris Riley, Margaret Trinkle and Jan Garbett for donating their time to KJHS, and extending it to the middle school.

Allen named to All-State Chorus

In November, Owen County Elementary made its first attempt at auditioning students for the Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Children’s Chorus. We were extremely pleased when we learned one of our fifth-grade students was selected to be a member of the chorus. Congratulations are in order to Emily Allen, who represented OCES vocally at the state level.
Nearly 500 fifth- and sixth-grade students from across the state of Kentucky auditioned for the All-State Children’s Chorus, and only 223 students were selected. Out of 255 possible points, the cut-off score was 242. This was a huge score increase from years past so competition is getting more intense.
Emily joined the other KCC members February 7 and 8 in Louisville. The students rehearsed the first evening, all the next day, and performed a concert that night under the direction of Sally K. Albrecht, a well-known composer and conductor.
OCES thanks Emily for all her hard work and is proud of her achievement.

Wright and Yount named to Honor Roll

Thomas Wright and Kendall Yount are students of The Frankfort Christian Academy and both are on the A-B Honor Roll for the third nine weeks of the school session.
