EMT charged with sexual abuse

STAFF REPORT

Kentucky State Police arrested an Owen County emergency medical technician on March 19 and charged him with first-degree sexual abuse.
Jeffery A. Smith is accused of sexually abusing a relative, who is a minor, approximately four years ago, according to KSP spokesman Chip Perry.
Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion said he terminated Smith’s employment upon learning of the charge.
Smith was arrested in Owenton at about 1:25 p.m. on March 19, according to an arrest report.
The report states the offense allegedly occurred at Smith’s former residence on O’Banion Lane while Smith was in charge of the child.
The county hired Smith as an EMT on Aug. 1, 2005. Prior to that he worked as an EMT in Carroll County from September 2004 until taking an EMT job in Owen County, according to a staff member in the Carroll County judge-executive’s office.
O’Banion said Smith has the right to appeal his termination to Fiscal Court within 30 days of the dismissal.
Smith was released from the Carroll County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.
His first court appearance is scheduled for April 13.
