EMT charged with sexual abuse

STAFF REPORT

Kentucky State Police arrested an Owen County emergency medical technician Monday and charged him with first-degree sexual abuse.
Jeffery A. Smith is accused of sexually abusing a relative, who is a minor, in 2003, according to state police spokesman Chip Perry.
Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion said he terminated Smith’s employment upon learning of the arrest.
O’Banion said Smith has the right to appeal the termination to Fiscal Court within 30 days.
The county hired Smith as an EMT on Aug. 1, 2005. Prior to that he worked as an EMT in Carroll County from September 2004 until taking the job in Owen County, according to a staff member in the Carroll County judge-executive’s office.
Smith is being held in the Carroll County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for March 23 .
