20/20 taskforces present recommendation list
Two years
of collecting community input through surveys and researching issues
for the county’s future culminated in a 90-minute presentation
at the Owen County High School auditorium Thursday night.
Members of the Owen 20/20 Taskforce Project discussed several lists
of ideas and suggestions for the county at last week’s forum.
The group examined both short-term and long-term planning issues
on a countywide scale and included a host of recommendations for
several specific quality-of-life areas focused upon by the five
taskforces.

NIE
program utilized in local classrooms
Each week,
4,000 copies are printed of The News-Herald. Of those copies, 537
go to
Owen County
schools.
They are a part of the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program, which
serves schools across the country. The papers are sponsored by a
different person or
company
each week.
Mark Cleveland has been a sponsor for three years. He was asked
by former News-Herald editor Patti Clark if he would be interested
in sponsoring a classroom.
He said he believes the program goes
hand-in-hand
with education.
“You want people to be literate and up-to-date on current
events,” he said. “It’s the perfect fit.”

Baby Songs: McElroy performs her one-person act at The Outpost
Dozens of people gathered
at The Outpost in Monterey Friday night, as part of the venue’s
“Every Other Friday” series of shows.
Groups and individuals strolled through the doors, opted whether
to make a voluntary donation at the door, huddled up with friends
at tables and joined in conversation.
Soon afterward, the lights dimmed and the audience hushed.
Eyes focused to the front of the room.
A loud knock banged out from a side door.
Rap-rap-rap!
