The Owen
County Lady Rebels came up short in their bid to win the 8th Region
All “A” Classic. Owen County fell to Carroll County
56-32 in the finals on Saturday night in Carrollton.
The Lady Rebels advanced to the championship game by defeating
Eminence in their opening game 58-15. Shea Green led the team
in scoring with 14 points while Shadoe Perry pitched in 10.
They followed up the win over Eminence with a hard-fought victory
over Gallatin County in the semifinals. The Rebels were led in
scoring by Junior Kelsey Williams and her 12 points. Williams
also had 12 rebounds to pace the Lady Rebels.
Coach Osbourne’s squad reeled off the last seven points
of the first quarter and led 13-7. Gallatin County then went on
a seven-point run of their own to tie the score at 13.
Owen County made its only field goal of the second quarter with
50 seconds left and hit a free throw to lead at halftime, 18-15.
The second half was much the same as the first half. The Lady
Rebels struggled to score on the offensive end, but did a good
job of playing aggressive defense and limiting the Lady Wildcats
to only six third-quarter points. The fourth quarter saw Gallatin
County take the lead on a three-pointer by Taylor Wood. Wood led
all scorers in the game with 20 points.
The Lady Rebels took the lead for good on a field goal by Eko
Kemper with 2:20 left in the game. Kemper followed that score
with another and then a key rebound off a Gallatin County miss
with 1:20 to play.
The Rebels made key defensive stops in the last minute. Shea Green
and Kelsey Williams each made important free throws in the final
seconds to seal the deal. Shea Green grabbed seven rebounds to
go along with seven points while Kendall Cochran pitched in with
six points and four steals.
The win set up the showdown with Carroll County in the finals
after the Lady Panthers knocked out Walton-Verona in the other
semifinal, 60-56.
In the championship game, the Lady Panthers took the opening tip
and sprinted out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back. Junior
Kendall Cochran scored eight points in the first half to lead
the Lady Rebels. She finished with 11 points.
The Lady Panthers were led by Whitney Ballinger who scored 14
points and dished out seven assists. Ballinger was named Most
Valuable Player for the tournament.
Carroll County used a balanced offense and pressure defense to
keep the Lady Rebels from getting into any sort of flow throughout
the game. Kelsey Williams had six points and seven rebounds for
the Lady Rebels. Shadoe Perry came off the bench to add six points.
Three members of the team were named to the All Tournament Team.
They included Shea Green, Kendall Cochran and Kelsey Williams.
The Lady Rebels’ next game is Monday at home versus South
Oldham. They also play on Feb. 2 at home against Trimble County.
