Police across Kentucky hit the roads hard during the heavily traveled Thanksgiving weekend, looking for speeders, checking for seatbelt usage and searching for drunk drivers.
Post 5 of the Kentucky State Police set up a checkpoint in each of the six counties it serves on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
From Wednesday, Nov. 22, to Sunday, Nov. 26, troopers from the post— which serves Owen, Gallatin, Carroll, Henry, Oldham and Trimble counties— made 300 traffic stops and issued 463 citations, according to preliminary data from Lt. John Moberly of the Kentucky State Police.
Of the 463 citations, 14 were for not using seatbelts, Moberly said. He said most were issued for speeding and reckless driving.
Also during the Nov. 22-26 timeframe, troopers from Post 5 made eight arrests for driving under the influence, six arrests for other miscellaneous offenses and responded to 24 collisions, Moberly said.
According to the state police Web site, there were 10 fatalities on Kentucky roadways during the extended Thanksgiving weekend. Moberly said none of the fatal crashes occurred on roads patrolled by Post 5.
Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond said his department stopped 20 vehicles over the holiday weekend, issuing 12 courtesy notices or citations.
The sheriff’s department also made one arrest for DUI.
