Jean Ellen Hiter, Regent of the Susannah Hart Shelby Chapter of
the DAR in Frankfort poses with “Miss Molly.”
Jean Ellen
Hiter, Regent of the Susannah Hart Shelby Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, gave a presentation about Miss Mary
DeSha, who was one of the four founders of the National Society
of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 1890. Miss
DeSha was a native Kentuckian who taught school in Lexington and
in Alaska. During the Spanish-American War she was instrumental
in organizing and training nurses to serve in the Army and Navy,
the present day Army Nurse Corps.
She held multiple DAR offices in the state and national societies.
The Kentucky Junior DAR is asking each DAR chapter in Kentucky to
help sew or purchase outfits for a doll named “Miss Molly”
in honor of Miss Mary DeSha, whose nickname was Molly. “Miss
Molly” will be raffled off at the National DAR Congress in
2007. All proceeds will go to support the Kate Duncan Smith DAR
School and the Tamassee DAR School.
Bethany
School representatives meet at Smith House
The food
was especially delicious for all those representing Bethany School
who ate at the Smith House Restaurant Friday. Because of traffic
delays on
I-71, some were late arriving but enjoyed the fellowship with other
school friends.
Those present for the occasion were: Melvin Mason, Gene Wynn, Bill
and Nancy Thompson, Naomi Shriver, John Toole, Kay Boots, Ernest
and Sara Smith, Delois Clifton, Ann Siler, Frances Lloyd, Jim and
Betty Lawrence, Wallace Whitton, Delores Rosenfeld and Don Crupper.
The group plans to meet at noon Dec. 9 at General Butler State Resort
Park. Everyone with any association to Bethany School is encouraged
to attend these functions.
