Electric blood drive
is Tuesday
Every three
seconds, a Kentucky hospital patient needs blood. It may be someone
in your family, a friend, neighbor, a co-worker, fellow church-attendee
or a complete stranger across town. The need is great and continues
day after day.
You might be surprised to learn how much blood is needed for medical
procedures. For example, a car accident victim may require up to
50 units of blood. A bone marrow transplant recipient needs 20 units
of blood and 120 units of plasma. An organ transplant team uses
40 units of blood, 30 units of platelets and 25 units of plasma
for the patient. A burn patient must have at least six units of
platelets. Heart surgery, performed multiple times a day in Kentucky,
requires six units of blood.
Hundreds of blood donors are needed each day in Kentucky to keep
our hospitals supplied with all the life-saving blood they need
to improve and save lives. Donations will be taken from noon to
5 p.m. Tuesday at the Owen Electric Blood Drive. To qualify as a
blood donor you must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 lb. or
more and be in general good health. A picture ID is required of
all donors.
From start to finish, it takes less than an hour to donate blood,
and you can do it every 56 days. For information, contact Lora Vliet
at (800) 775-2522.
