Students in Babs Newcomb’s fifth-grade class at the Owen County
Elementary School returned to the classroom Tuesday after a day
off on Monday. Teachers spent part of the day Monday learning about
the district’s CATS scores.

point increase
For Owen County Elementary
School, this year’s Commonwealth Accountability Test Scores
(CATS) showed a significant improvement.
With a previous academic index of 70.8, this year’s index
was 71.0, two-tenths of a point higher. Since 1999, the index has
risen close to 11.5 points, growing higher each year.

ConnectKentucky announced last week that the community, with a population
of 167 people, is among four in the state to receive nearly $1 million
in grant dollars to make the Internet more accessible.

Maggie Williams and Lauren Strohmeier, juniors at Randolph-Macon
Woman’s College and Transylvania University, respectively,
will be participating in study-abroad programs starting
this month.
