Historical society busy with picnic, home tour

Work has really been underway for society members and our carpenters Dean Riddle and Jim Acton. We were getting ready for Kentucky Wild Horse, which is the John Harrod bluegrass band. On Friday morning, rain came down and “Plan B” went into effect. We went to Monterey Baptist Church fellowship hall and gym and set up there. This was a fundraiser for the society, which turned out very well considering the weather. We enjoyed lots of fried chicken with all the trimmings and delicious desserts.
The band and its fun-filled evening of jokes, laughter, songs and music was enjoyed by approximately 65 adults and children. Many door prizes were given away, and Shannan Goodrich of Gratz won the main door prize of the evening, a beautiful pot of chrysanthemums, compliments of Doris Riley. Other door prizes were donated by merchants of Owen County including Connie and Veronica Gayle’s Daily Breads, certificates from Dairy Queen, Hometown Pizza, Cowboys, Snappy Tomato, Subway, Minch Hardware, North Park and Petals on the Square. These and several gifts for the children were all appreciated. Three people joined the society during the evening.
Some of the society ladies worked hard to get several museum rooms finished except for the decorating of pictures and artifacts for the Woman’s Open Home Tour. Those who worked so faithfully were Peggy Trinkle, Doris Riley, Joann Threet, Teresa Fisher, Arletta Howard and Jeannie Williams. The sunroom, kitchen, bath, Rotary and men’s room are all completed. The carpenters have finished most of the attic with only a few things remaining. The entire attic has new paneling. New shelves have been built, windows framed in and most of the trim work has been completed. The next thing will be to seal the floor and build banisters around the stairwell. We’re very excited about the new attic, which gives us so much storage room for the large tax and law books and containers of old News-Heralds and National Geographic magazines.
Sunday was a beautiful day for the Woman’s Club Home Tour. It began at the museum and continued through town. We had a large crowd in attendance, and Arletta Howard, Ruth Ann Hazlett and Teresa Fisher served lemonade, tea, coffee and pastries to guests. Verna K. Payne sold tickets at the door. Three new people joined the society on Sunday. Doris Riley, Peggy Trinkle and Jeannie Williams also gave visitors tours of the museum. The guests were asked to bring in old wedding pictures of their families with names of the husband and the wife’s maiden name, marriage and death dates and number of children for captions for pictures in the ladies’ room. We need to work on them now, so please bring us your family’s information soon. We will make copies and return the original photos, but please write your name on the back of each picture so they will be returned.
Anyone who would like to put history information in acid-free folders, please call and let us know. We truly need assistance with this job.
