Lady Rebel soccer highlights to air Thursday
Highlights of the Lady Rebels vs Grant County soccer game will be aired at 7 p.m. Thursday on Cable Channel 20. The show is produced by S.T.E.P. (Student Technology Entrepreneur Productions), a multimedia venture of Owen County High School.
Middle School organizational PTO meeting slated
A meeting to organize a PTO at the Bowling Middle School will be held at 6:30 p.m.Thursday in the school library. Please try to attend. However, if you cannot attend the meeting but wish to be a part of PTO, please contact Marsha Derringer at 484-2189 and let her know of your participation. At this meeting, election of officers will be held and we will discuss the possibility of a fundraiser for the fall.
Hog roast dinner is Friday before game
The Friends of Football will be holding its annual hog roast dinner before the homecoming game on Friday. The meal features Big Rick’s pork tenderloin sandwiches, baked beans, slaw, chips and a drink for only $5.
Fun Run/Walk is Saturday
The Owen County Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring the Sweet Owen Days 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk Saturday. T-shirts will be given to all runners and walkers who preregister and to others as long as the supply lasts. Registration fee is $12 per individual and $50 per corporate team of five runners. Churches and businesses may enter more than one team. Registration forms may be picked up at The News-Herald, Peoples Bank, First Farmers Bank or call Anna Cook at 463-2691.
Library offering computer classes
The Owen County Public Library will offer a split class of Microsoft Word I and Digital Photography from 9 a.m. to noon and then 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library. Class size is limited and registration is required. Call the library at 484-3450 for more information or to register.
Cornhole tournament is Saturday
A cornhole tournament will be held Saturday at the Owen County Fairgrounds to benefit the Meeting the Needs Ministry. Signup begins at 9 a.m. with the tournament starting at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 a person or $20 a couple. Each winning team will receive a trophy. Prizes will also be awarded. Clerk’s office closed Saturday
The Owen County Clerk’s office will be closed Saturday due to Sweet Owen Days.
OCHS open house is Tuesday
OCHS will have an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mid-term progress reports will be distributed at that time.
Growth-management meeting is Tuesday
The third growth-management meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Robinson Family Farm on Swope Road. All residents in that area of the community are encouraged to attend. A fourth meeting will be held two weeks later in the Monterey area with the final meeting slated for mid-October at the courthouse.
Project Graduation to meet Sept. 21
The Class of 2007 Project Graduation will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 in the elementary school cafeteria.
Family craft night planned
The Owen County Elementary School will host a family craft night at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 in the school’s cafeteria. Those attending will build a variety of wooden crafts, many of which were donated by Home Depot or Lowes. Refreshments and hammers will be provided. Inflatables carnival is Sept. 23
An inflatable carnival to benefit families affected by congenital heart defects will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Owen County Fairgrounds. The proceeds from the carnival will benefit “God’s Special Little Hearts,” an organization being formed to offer financial support to families affected by congenital heart defects. There will be Disney bouncers, a 22 ft. slide, an inflatable obstacle course, games, food, door prizes and a cornhole tournament. Bring your children to have fun and know you are supporting a great organization with a great cause! Winner of each category (individual and team) will receive half of entry fees collected for category entered. Free Family Fun Night features Amazing Bats
The next Free Family Fun Night at the Owen County Public Library will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25. The evening will feature Amazing Bats. Learn about these truly amazing animals through a slide program and games. The program explores echolocation — how it works, what it sounds like. Meet a native Big Brown Bat. Library sponsoring teen art contest
The Library is sponsoring a teen art contest. Artists between 13 and 18 years of age who live in Owen County may enter their original work in either two- or three-dimensional form. No computer-generated work accepted. Only one entry per category. Artwork must be ready for display or framed for hanging. Prizes will be awarded and the art will be displayed in the library for one year. Art may be submitted Sept.. 25 through Sept. 30 during regular library business hours. Class of 1950 to meet

Benefit for Perkins planned
The Wheatley community will host a benefit for Brianna Perkins at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Wheatley Community Center. Homemade chili, soup and pies will be served. An after-dinner show will feature “Wheatley’s Got Talent” and a silent auction will be taking place throughout the night. If you are interested in being part of the talent, please contact Jim Wainscott at 463-2384. If you would like to donate to the silent auction, please contact Teresa Dye at 463-2539. All proceeds will go to Brianna and her family. Please come out and enjoy the fun.
