Trusty’s changing owners after 33 years

“I love getting to talk to everybody. I like knowing people’s ‘usual’ orders.”

F or 33 years, Trusty’s General Store has been the lunch-time hangout for farmers young and old. Whether discussing their tobacco crops or just shooting the breeze, customers know the store will always have a spot for them at the front-window bench.
Come Friday, though, it won’t be Juanita who greets you at the counter.
Come Friday, Trusty’s will be under new management. Ben and Juanita Trusty signed the papers last Thursday that turned over the store to its new owner, Debbie Phillips of Jonesville.
Phillips previously owned and managed the Jonesville store for seven and a half years and, after a brief hiatus, has decided it is time to get back into the grocery business. She and her two daughters are planning a move to the New Liberty area near the end of the year.
Missy Osborne, a Trusty’s employee, says she is looking forward to working with Phillips and continuing to build relationships with customers. “I love getting to talk to everybody,” she said. “I like knowing people’s ‘usual’ orders.”
Phillips is not anticipating many changes when she takes over in a few days. Perhaps the biggest difference will be the store’s new name — S&K Country Grocery.
“I will add some items to the menu and make movies available to rent, but there won’t be a lot of changes,” Phillips said.
