Holiday Closings
• The News-Herald will be closed Sept. 4 for the Labor Day holiday. all editorial and advertising copy for the Sept. 6 edition must be submitted no later than noon Sept. 1 for inclusion in that edition.
• The Owen County Clerk’s Office will be closed Sept. 2 and Sept. 4 for the Labor Day holiday.

Sunflowers ready for viewing
The sunflowers at Pheasant Ridge Hunt Club are now in full bloom. Local residents are invited to come see the flowers, take photographs and look for wildlife.
Prom Closet planned for high school
Donations of gently used prom dresses and formal wear are requested for Owen County students who do not have the finances to purchase them. If you would like to make a donation, contact Diana O’Toole at 484-4269 or Dana Gillat 484-2618.
Head Start applications available
Head Start is accepting applications for the 2006-2007 school year. Eligible children need to be 3 by Oct. 1, 2006. For more information, call Paula Bond at 484-4249.
Applications being accepted for Christian preschool
The Owen County Christian Preschool is taking applications for its 3- and 4-year-old program. For more information please call Brandy Walker at 750-2505. Applications may be picked up at the First Baptist Church office.
Parents wanted for OCHS rewards committee
OCHS has established a rewards committee to focus on recognizing positive student behavior. The school is seeking parents who would be willing to serve on this committee for the next year. The group will meet approximately one time per month at the high school. Refreshments will be served and the first meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 7 in the media center.
Sweet Owen Days pageants slated
Miss Sweet Owen and Miss Teen Sweet Owen Pageants will be held again this year in conjunction with Sweet Owen Days on Sept. 16. For more information please contact Gayla at the Owen County Judge-Executive’s Office at 484-3405.
Project Graduation to meet
Project Graduation Class of 2007 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Owen County Elementary School.
Hunter education class offered
A hunter education course will be taught by Bob Fraley of the Department of Fish and Wildlife at the Owen County Public Library from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Participants must attend both days to receive certification. Registration is required. Call the library at 484-3450 to register. For more information call Bob Fraley at (502) 857-4842.
Poker run, cruise-in is Saturday
A poker run and cruise-in to benefit the Salvation Army Angel Tree will be sponsored by the Central Kentucky Riders Motorcycle Touring Club Saturday. The event will be at the Starway Fun Park, Louisville Road (U.S. 60) in Frankfort. Registration starts at 10 a.m. with the first bike leaving at noon. The Capital City Classic Auto Club will be featured at the cruise-in.
Tipton-Bramblett reunion is Sunday
The Tipton-Bramblett reunion will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Clear Creek Park in Shelbyville. The shelter is in the rear of the park through gate #2. Signs will be posted. Bring a potluck dish.
Pirate Island Madness theme of
Family Fun Night at the library
The Owen County Public Library presents Pirate Island Madness for Free Family Fun Night, at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Come enjoy a night full of fun with two zany pirates as they tell stories mixed with the island music of Jimmy Buffett, Harry Belafonte and more.
Cub Scout registration is Monday
Registration for Cub Scouting will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Owen County Fairgrounds shelter house. Registration will also be held at the elementary school cafeteria at 6 p.m. Aug. 31. Cub Scouting is open to all boys in the first through fifth grades. Please attend one of the meetings to sign up for Cub Scouts. Clifton reunion is Sept. 3
The annual Clifton reunion will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 3 at the Owen County Extension building on Fairgrounds Road. A potluck lunch will be served about 1 p.m. Bring a covered dish and join the fun.
James reunion is Sept. 3
The annual James reunion will be held Sept. 3 at General Butler State Park in Carrollton. Those attending should bring a basket dinner and meet in the stone shelter at lunch time.
Class of 1996 to gather Sept. 9
The Class of 1996 will be having its reunion from 7 p.m. to midnight Sept. 9 at the Capital Plaza in Frankfort. If you have not paid to attend you still can. The cost is $35 per person or $65 per couple. Make checks payable to “Class of 1996,” and mail to Stephanie Howard, 155 Squiresville Road, Owenton, KY 40359.
Storytime beginning Sept. 12
The Owen County Public Library’s Storytime will be starting Sept. 12 and will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings. Storytimes include reading, fun picture books, singing songs, learning hand rhymes and making a simple craft. This program is designed for preschoolers, ages 3-6, and their parents or caregivers. Fun Run/Walk is Sept. 16
The Owen County Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring the Sweet Owen Days 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk Sept. 16. T-shirts will be given to all runners and walkers who preregister and to others as long as the supply lasts. Registration fee is $12 per individual and $50 per corporate team of five runners. Churches and businesses may enter more than one team. Registration forms may be picked up at The News-Herald, Peoples Bank, First Farmers Bank or call Anna Cook at 463-2691.
OCHS open house is Sept. 19
OCHS will have an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19. Mid-term progress reports will be distributed at that time.
