Halloween may be almost three months away, but that doesn’t stop Curtis Sigretto and his Owenton-based company “Halloween Express” from bringing out the ghosts and goblins right now.

In No Child Left Behind assessments

Owen County Elementary School principal Charlotte Elkins was looking forward to getting the results back from the No Child Left Behind assessments. After last year’s scores were low in math, the teachers pulled together and really worked hard to help students bring up their scores in the content area that was pulling them down, she said. And they succeeded. The percentage of students who scored proficient in math doubled.

After more than a year of research, the Growth Management Committee went before the fiscal court last week with its initial recommendations.


Rabid bat found in Owen, residents warned

Owen County has its first confirmed case of rabies in 16 years. The Three Rivers District Health Department submitted a bat collected from the Timber Lake area on Aug. 10 to the State Rabies Lab in Frankfort. The bat was confirmed positive by the lab the following morning. Owen County’s last positive case was also in a bat, in 1990.
