cuts in the animal shelter budget left the fiscal court searching
for other ways to shelter animals in Owen County.
The solution turned out to be easier than expected and won’t
disrupt the current system.
Owen County dog wardens Deanna and Elden Wolfe have raised beagles
for years, but recently decided to sell all those animals, opening
up 14 kennels on the Wolfe’s property.
The Wolfes offered to lease those kennels to the county for $1,000
a year.
The fiscal court accepted the proposal, agreeing to sign a two-year
contract for the kennels.
The fiscal court had been leasing five kennels from the Wolfes
for $500 for six months, for a price of $200 per kennel per year.
The new lease cuts the cost to $71.43 per year for each kennel.
Ten of those kennels are on concrete, while the other four are
in the woods.
All the kennels have houses.
“This gives us the ability to take a little more time,”
said Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion, stating that the current
animal shelter budget is limited to $5,000, which isn’t
enough to build an animal shelter.
The fiscal court also agreed to buy a diamond plated dog box from
the Wolfes for $500.
The box, which the Wolfes purchased for $600, will be used to
haul dogs, and will remain the property of the county.
