The Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys & Girls Ranch session began July 2 with campers from Owen County. Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond and Deputy Marvin Goodrich transported the campers for a week of fun and learning. Pictured are Sheriff Hammond, Deputy Goodrich, head counselors Kevin Crum and Carlon Woodall, counselor Daniel Carper and campers Zachary Kent, Aaron Vergara, Daniel Layne Blackburn, Tyler Neal and Alex Murphy.

The Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys & Girls Ranch opened their 30th year of serving Kentucky’s youth on June 4 with boys in attendance. The 2006 camping season runs for eight weeks, serving both boys and girls on alternating weeks.
The ranch is a nonprofit organization, serving Kentucky children between the ages of 8 and 11 through a summer camping program designed to build self-esteem and respect for themselves, others and law enforcement professionals. The camp is free to campers, thanks to the dedication and support of sheriffs, members and contributors. The cost of serving these children is $300 per week per child.
“We have many exciting programs and activities in store for the campers. Along with our new ampitheatre, we have several new pieces of playground equipment thanks to a grant from CitiFinancial, as well as arts and crafts, nature, sports, swimming, fishing, a fire-prevention program and a drug awareness program,” said camp director Ray Stoess. “It should be a week filled with fun and learning for the campers. We hope the campers will create a lifetime of memories during their stay.”
Live performances by Zachary Allen on July 3 and 4 were enjoyed by all the campers in attendance. Allen is a singer, actor and stage performer in New York. He has performed on Broadway and with his band on summer camp and Radio Disney tours.
