AGRICULTURE
Haying
Time

— Photos by MAGGIE WILLIAMS
It’s that time again. When they’re not setting tobacco,
farmers all over Owen County have been busy getting up hay for
the winter months. That was true for Troy Oliver, above, who made
a pass through a field off of Moxley Road in Wheatley. At left,
Andrew Glacken, son of William and Rhonda Glacken of Glencoe,
works on a farm in Gallatin County. While many farmers still put
up dry roll bales, quite a few have made use of silage wrappers
made available by the local Phase I Board. Within the last four
years it has purchased three bale wrappers — one individual
bale wrapper and two in-line continuous bale wrappers. Kim Strohmeier,
county extension agent for agriculture, reports that the in-line
wrappers are used most often because they require less plastic
and are more time-efficient. The wrappers are housed and rented
at Southern States in Owenton.
