State baseball tourney set to open

New state champion to be crowned on Saturday at Applebee’s Park in Lexington

The pairings for the state baseball tournament are set.
The tournament, which will be held at Applebee’s Park in Lexington, begins tonight and runs through Saturday.
In tonight’s opening game, at 6 p.m., Lexington Catholic (33-6-1) takes on South Laurel (27-10).
At 8 p.m., St. Xavier (26-9) plays Daviess County (29-6).
On Thursday at 6 p.m. Beechwood (35-5-1) plays Christian County (29-9) and at 8 p.m. Pleasure Ridge Park (35-5) meets Boyd County (22-8).
Semifinals will be held Friday at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and the state championship is at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Christian County was last year’s state runner-up, beating Harrison County 8-2 and Boyd County 6-1, before losing in the championship to Lexington Christian 7-0.
Christian County reached this year’s state tournament by pounding St. Mary in the sectionals 18-0 and 17-0, giving the Colonels 13 shutouts this season.
Their opponent, Beechwood, won the All A Classic this year, and reached the state tournament by beating Harrison County 6-5 and 5-1.
Boyd County is the only other returning team from last year.
The Lions won their first-round game in last year’s state tournament, beating Corbin 13-2, before losing in the semifinals to Christian County 6-1.
They reached this year’s state tournament by obliterating Sheldon Clark 10-0 and 23-2.
Boyd County takes on Pleasure Ridge Park, which beat North Hardin in the sectionals 10-0 and 9-6.
Lexington Catholic defeated defending state champion Lexington Christian twice this season and reached the state tournament by beating Danville 11-5 and 9-6.
Their opponent, South Laurel, toppled Powell County 9-0 and 4-3 to reach state.
St. Xavier knocked off Shelby County 9-3 and 10-0 to reach state, and will play Daviess County, which beat Allen County-Scottsville 6-1 and 3-0.
In the last state poll, released on May 15 by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association, Pleasure Ridge Park was ranked No. 1 and Lexington Catholic was ranked No. 2.
Beechwood (No. 8), Christian County (No. 11), Boyd County (No. 13) and St. Xavier (No. 18) were also ranked in the poll.
South Laurel and Daviess County were not ranked, although Daviess County received three votes.

6 p.m. — Lexington Catholic vs. South Laurel
8 p.m. — St. Xavier vs. Daviess County
Thursday
6 p.m. — Beechwood vs. Christian County
8 p.m. — Pleasure Ridge Park vs. Boyd County
Friday
6 p.m. — Lexington Catholic/South Laurel winner vs. St. Xavier/Daviess County winner
8:30 p.m. — Beechwood/Christian County winner vs. Pleasure Ridge Park/Boyd County winner
Saturday
7 p.m. — Championship
