Gran Mefford
has announced his resignation as boys basketball coach at Owen
County High School, and is expected to also resign as athletic
director
“I took a job as director of instruction at Perry Park,”
Mefford said. “I’m going to be teaching golf at the
resort.”
In 13 seasons as the boys basketball coach Mefford compiled a
record of 159-191, leading the Rebels to the All A Classic final
four and the regional final during the 1995-96 season.
The Rebels went 13-15 this past season, losing in the first round
of the district tournament.
Mefford leaves as the all-time winningest boys basketball coach
at Owen County, with more than double the victories of Dom Fucci,
who won 79 games from 1985-1992.
Mefford has been the athletic director for 13 years and worked
for Owen County schools for 22 years, retiring as the assistant
principal after the 2003-04 school year.
Before his stint at Owen County, Mefford worked and coached in
the Carroll County school system.
“Probably your biggest challenge as an athletic director
is finding good coaches and keeping them,” Mefford said.
“I’m tickled that I stayed for this long.”
Mefford, who also serves as assistant director of golf at Perry
Park, said he would like to continue helping the Owen County sports
programs — mostly during the golf off season — and
that he plans to stay around long enough to train his A.D. successor.
While principal Tim Hitzfield is out of town on vacation and no
decisions have been made on a new basketball coach, Mefford said
his hope is that assistant coach Devin Duvall gets the job.
