Dalton Mears contemplates the placings of the breeding ewe class
at the District Livestock Judging Contest on May 20. He placed
7th overall in sheep judging.
The 4-H Livestock Judging
Team had a great day Saturday as they competed in the District
Livestock Competition in Boone County. The team was divided into
two age groups. The Clover Team consists of Cheyenne Messerang,
Sawyer Williams, Corey Cobb, Haylie Campbell, Brianna Campbell,
Michael Wash and Dalton Mears. The Intermediate Team members who
competed were Morgan Forsee, Chelsey True, Patrick Jansen and
Kyle Kelly. Colton Petite competed in the novice division.
Each team judged a class of market lambs, breeding ewes, breeding
heifers, market steers, breeding gilts, market hogs, market goats
and breeding goats. The Clover Team competed in a Skill-A-Thon
consisting of wholesale meat identification, breeds and parts
of animals, EPDs and calculations for record keeping of livestock.
The Intermediate Team had to answer questions on two classes and
give judging reasons on the heifer class.
In the Clover Team, Cheyenne placed eighth, Michael placed fifth,
and Sawyer placed first in Beef Judging. In Sheep Judging, Hayley
placed ninth, Dalton placed seventh and Sawyer placed first. In
Swine Judging, Cheyenne placed eighth and Sawyer placed second.
This year Goat Judging was added to the competition. Corey placed
seventh and Sawyer placed third in that category. Overall in the
judging classes, Corey placed eighth, Dalton placed seventh and
Sawyer received a first place. In the Skill-A-Thon contest, Sawyer
placed third. Overall in the Clover Division, Sawyer Williams
came home with the top award out of 25 clovers.
In the Intermediate Team, Kyle placed sixth in Sheep Judging and
Morgan placed third. In Swine Judging, Patrick placed sixth and
Chelsey placed third. In Goats, Morgan placed fifth and Kyle placed
third. In Beef, Kyle placed fifth and Patrick placed third. In
the Overall Judging classes, Patrick placed seventh, Morgan placed
sixth and Kyle placed third. In the questions and reasons category,
Morgan placed tenth and Kyle placed fourth. Overall in the Intermediate
Division, Patrick placed tenth, Morgan placed sixth, and Kyle
placed third.
There were more than 80 youth from eight counties who participated
in the District Livestock Judging event. This is the fourth year
Owen County has competed. The next competition the team will be
competing in will be the State Livestock Judging Contest at the
University of Kentucky on June 20.
