An inter-denominational
effort is in place to organize a mission house for Owen County.
In January of this year, after months of individual prayer, some
ladies — Kitty Cammack, Teresa Dye, Anita Wainscott, Anna
Cook and Cindy Wilhoite among them — gathered at the Associational
WMU meeting to hear Bessie and Lester McPeek talk about their
ministry in eastern Kentucky. Inspired by the story of a small
ministry which has grown into a mission house serving the community,
the women realized they had been praying for the same thing.
All dream of a place where young mothers and young families can
go for reprieve from the stresses of everyday. According to the
Kentucky State Data Center, there is a significant disparity between
Owen County and other areas based on income levels, literacy and
dropout rates. This knowledge has helped inform the mission pioneers
of how great a need a mission house is.
Tentatively called Harvest House Ministry Center, the effort will
operate from the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church in Owenton
with future plans of renting a house in the county seat.
Using the already successful food pantry as a starting block,
the center will grow to include a diaper ministry, story hour,
parenting classes, backyard Bible clubs, and will have strollers,
baby clothes, and other used items available for young families.
Setting the new mission house apart from others already in place
here will be its focus on sharing the gospel. It will be “Christ-centered,”
said Cammack, and will focus on spiritual, emotional and physical
needs.
The leaders of this initiative stress that it is still in the
very early planning stages and encourage any churches, organizations
or individuals to contact them for more information on how to
get involved.
