By the end of the first
inning, it looked like the Rebels were over-matched and were headed
for a short, and somewhat embarrassing trip to the All A Classic.
But that’s why they don’t play one inning.
Owen County has been sitting on top of the world for most of this
season. After losing the season-opener, the Rebels strung together
nine straight wins, winning the regional title and the Region
7/8 sectional game to punch a ticket to the Class A state tournament.
Sitting at 13-6 the Rebels had a date with state-ranked Owensboro
Catholic, the defending Class A champion, which entered the tournament
with a record of 19-2.
And by the end of the first inning, the Aces led 2-0, after bashing
out three line- drive singles, stealing three bases and taking
advantage of a walk and a passed ball.
Owen County went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, making it
look like this one might be a five-inning blowout.
But Owen County pulled it together, settled down and cut the lead
to 2-1, then, trailing 4-1, tied the game 4-4, before losing in
extra innings.
It was a short trip to the state tournament, but a profitable
one.
The Rebels learned they can take on the state’s best teams
and hang with them.
And that’s a confidence builder they’ll need heading
into the district tournament.
Because they have one more shot at returning to the state tournament.
And none of the teams standing in the way are as good as Owensboro
Catholic.
