Absentee voting ends Monday
Any voter who will be out of town on election day may vote in the county clerk’s office through Monday. The voting machine will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during regular business hours.
Middle school open house is Thursday
Bowling Middle School will hold an open house/showcase from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday. Student work from this year will be displayed and the chorus will perform from 5:45-6:15 p.m. A basketball game featuring Teachers vs. Students will start at 6:30 p.m. Students have been voting for a favorite male and female teacher and those teachers will be crowned that night. There are many other student activities planned.
City-wide clean-up starts Thursday
The city of Owenton is sponsoring a city-wide clean-up week, from Thursday through May 20. City residents, with address verification, may take their garbage, debris and junk to the transfer station on Blanton Street from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at no cost.
MBC Relay team selling Tony’s Bama BBQ
The Monterey Baptist Church Relay for Life team will be selling Tony’s Bama BBQ from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in front of the hospital. Family packs are $10 and can be pre-ordered by calling Patti at 514-3478. Sandwiches can be purchased for $3 each. Drinks and other items will also be available. The team is also taking pre-orders for the Memorial Day weekend. The BBQ is perfect for graduation picnics, family reunions and other get-togethers. Order by May 24 for delivery on May 26.
Postal service collecting food items
Owenton Postal employees will once again participate in the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive. Non-perishable food items placed in a bag by your mailbox will be picked up by the mail carrier on Saturday. They can also be dropped off at the post office. The Postal Service will deliver the items to a local food bank. For more information, call Darla Baker at 484-2745.
Tug-of-War, truck pull is Saturday
The Northern Kentucky Tuggers Association will hold a tug-of-war and truck pull at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Owen County Fairgrounds. Rain date is May 19. Admission is $6. Four classes. $25 entry fee. Scales open at 5 p.m.
Post offices open Tuesday
All Post Offices are open on Election Day and there will be mail delivery.
County clerk’s office to be closed Tuesday
The Owen County Clerk’s Office will be closed to the public on election day.
SBDM, PTO elections set
Site-based Decision-making Council parent representative elections at the primary school will be held during the Mother’s Day luncheon at the school on Thursday and elections for elementary parent representatives will be held at that school on Friday during the Mother’s Day luncheon. Any parent with a student in the primary school next year may vote in the primary school election. Parents with students at the elementary school may vote in the elementary school election. Elections will also be held for PTO officers during both luncheons.
Mother’s Day Social planned
El Bethel Christian Church will host a Mother’s Day event from 2 to 4 p.m. May 13 at the owen County Elementary School. Comedienne, musician and motivational speaker Stephanie Schaefer will be the featured entertainer. The event is free and open to the public. Kindergarten, preschool registration is May 19
Parents interested in enrolling their children in preschool or kindergarten in Owen County should contact the Family Resource Center at 484-3595 to make appointments. Appointments will be taken for registration times from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19. Parents will be told what they need to bring with them when they call to make their appointments.
DAR to meet May 20
The John Guill chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DA) will meet at 11 a.m. May 20 with the Captain John Lillard chapter and the Simon Kenton chapter at the Holiday Express in Dry Ridge. The meeting will begin with a catered lunch. Barbara Castle Pugh, KSDAR state regent, will be the guest. The cost of lunch is $8.50. Make reservations by calling Peggy Trinkle at 484-5382 before Tuesday.
Cookout for a Cure set for May 26
The annual Cookout for a Cure, sponsored by Owen County Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26 at the courthouse. This will also be the opening day of the Farmers’ Market, which is being moved back to the courthouse lawn this season. All proceeds from the cookout will go to Relay for Life.
Gratz Historical Association to meet
The Gratz Community Historical Association will meet at 7 p.m. June 5 at Norma Jean’s Country Store in Gratz.
GED testing is June 8
