Relay Fund-raisers
Craft night planned
The Monterey Baptist Church Relay for Life team will hold a Crop ’Til You Drop Craft Night at 6 p.m. April 28. Fifty percent of all Creative Memories items purchased will go toward the team’s efforts. Additional inventory will be on hand to purchase that night. The event is free but participants should plan to chip in a few dollars for pizza that night.
Yard sale is Friday, Saturday
Poplar Grove Baptist is having a church-wide yard sale at the junction of Hwy. 35 and Hwy. 127 on Friday and Saturday. All proceeds go to the Relay for Life team.

Softball league sign-ups under way
Owen County Parks & Recreation is holding team sign-ups for its spring/summer softball leagues. Leagues to be offered are Men’s Open (Fridays), Church Co-ed (Tuesdays), and Open Co-ed (Thursdays). The fee for open league teams is $350. The fee for church teams is $250. League fees are due before a team’s first ball game. League play will begin next week. To register a team, or for questions please call Owen County Parks & Recreation at 484-3225.
Class of 1981 seeking members
The OCHS class of 1981 reunion committee is seeking current addresses and/or e-mail addresses of its members for its 25th class reunion. Bessie Sparks Scholarship applications are available at the high school as well as at Peoples Bank & Trust Co.
Absentee voting under way
Any voter who will be out of town on election day may vote in the county clerk’s office through May 15. The voting machine will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during regular business hours. Voters who are disabled or unable to vote at the polls on election day or at the clerk’s office before election day may apply for a paper absentee ballot through May 9. Applications may be made in the county clerk’s office until 4 p.m. that day.
Mobile mammogram unit to be in town
The mobile mammogram unit will be at the Owen County Health Department Thursday. Call 484-5736 to schedule an appointment.
Kindergarten, preschool registration is Friday and May 19
Parents interested in enrolling their children in preschool or kindergarten in Owen County should contact the Family Resource Center at 484-3595 to make appointments. Appointments will be taken for registration times from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19. Parents will be told what they need to bring with them when they call to make their appointments.
Fashion, variety show is Friday
The 4-H Fashion Review and Variety Show will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Owen County Extension Office.
Wheatley Idol is Saturday night
The Dallasburg Baptist Church Relay for Life team will hold a relay fund-raiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Wheatley Community Center. Wheatley Idol will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a silent auction going on before and during the event. If you’d like to participate, call Ann Wainscott at 463-2384. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
Scholarship applications due Monday
The Martha Lee Stamper Scholarship is due at the Owen County Extension Office by Monday. For more information please call 484-5703.
UK alumni to meet Tuesday
The Owen County UK Alumni Club will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Owen County Extension Office. The guest speaker will be Tony Neely, media relations director for UK Football. Donkey Basketball set for May 3
Project Graduation will host Donkey Basketball at 7 p.m. May 3 at the middle school.
May 9 last day to apply for paper absentee ballot
Voters who are disabled or unable to vote at the precincts on election day May 16 may apply for a paper absentee ballot. May 9 is the last day to apply for a paper ballot. Applications can be made in the Owen County Clerk’s office until 4 p.m. that day.
Voting machines to be inspected May 8
The inspection of election voting machines for the May 16 primary will be at 10 a.m. May 8 in the Owen County Clerk’s office.
Safe sitter class set for May 13
Three Rivers District Health Department and the Owen County Extension Office will host a Safe Sitter class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 13. Safe Sitter is a medically accurate program that teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children. The class teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. Call 484-3412 to register. The class fee is $15. Pre-registration is required. The deadline to register is May 3.
Cookout for a Cure set for May 26
The annual Cookout for a Cure, sponsored by Owen County Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26 at the courthouse. This will also be the opening day of the Farmers’ Market, which is being moved back to the courthouse lawn this season. All proceeds from the cookout will go to Relay for Life.
