Judo teams brings home 12 firsts

On April 8, the Rebels Judo Team traveled to Bowling Green to compete in the annual O.J. Helvey Kentucky State Judo Championship.
The seven female members of the Rebels judo club brought home six gold and five silver medals.
Annie Adams and Chelsea Smith, the two youngest competitors (8 years of age) brought home a silver and a gold, respectively.
Alexis Kelley and Miranda Owens garnered two medals each in two separate divisions, with Kelley nabbing two silvers and Owens grabbing a gold and a silver.
Brande’ Guyan, a junior at Owen County High School, brought home a silver; Laura Colston, a sophomore, brought home a gold; and senior Kayla Meadows won two golds in separate divisions.
The medals, however, didn’t end with the girls.
Thirteen boys traveled to Bowling Green with the Rebels judo team, and returned with 16 medals—five bronze, four silver, and seven gold.
David Gray, the youngest member of the team (6), brought home a gold and silver in two divisions.
Wyatt Rohling and Clay Beverly (7 years old) won a bronze and gold, respectively.
The three Henderson boys, Jarrod, Gabe and Jordan, each fought and earned a gold for their efforts.
Brothers James and John Thompson garnered medals as well, earning a bronze and silver in their divisions.
Robert Beverly and Joe Clark, both competing in two divisions, brought home two medals each. Beverly earned a silver and bronze, and Clark two golds.
The lone senior male competitor, Todd Harwood of the Kentucky State Police, also earned a reward, winning a bronze against his competitors.
The Rebels junior judo team won 22 medals overall (the three seniors returned with four), and earned the team 74 overall points to win the Junior Division’s first-place team trophy.
Bowling Green Judo had 63 points for second and Wakaishu Judo of Louisville placed third with 26 points.
