Relay Fund-raisers
Relay yard sale set
The Actaris Relay For Life Team will be having a yard sale/bake sale on Saturday in the parking lot of Actaris.
Craft night planned
The Monterey Baptist Church Relay for Life team will hold a Crop ’Til You Drop Craft Night at 6 p.m. April 28. Fifty percent of all Creative Memories items purchased will go toward the team’s efforts. Anyone who would like their supplies to be in by that evening should turn in orders to Mary Jo Vinal no later than April 20. She can be reached at 484-5813 or at the church office on Monday and Friday at 484-2555. Additional inventory will be on hand to purchase that night. The event is free but participants should plan to chip in a few dollars for pizza that night.
Couples bunco scheduled
The MBC Relay For Life team is sponsoring a Spring Bunco Night at 6 p.m. April 29. The cost is $15 per couple or $10 for an individual. The event will be held at the church. A portion of the entry fees will go to the Relay team. Attendees should sign up by April 23. Call the church at 484-2555 for more information or to sign up.

Community News
Softball league sign-ups under way
Owen County Parks & Recreation is holding team sign-ups for its spring/summer softball leagues. Leagues to be offered are Men’s Open (Fridays), Church Co-ed (Tuesdays), and Open Co-ed (Thursdays). The fee for open league teams is $350. The fee for church teams is $250. League fees are due before a team’s first ball game. League play will begin the week of May 1. Local church services now on Channel 20
All local church services which were originally broadcast on Cable Channel 4 are now on Channel 20.
Class of 1981 seeking members
The OCHS class of 1981 reunion committee is seeking current addresses and/or e-mail addresses of its members for its 25th class reunion. Bessie Sparks Scholarship applications are available at the high school as well as at Peoples Bank & Trust Co.
Absentee voting under way
Any voter who will be out of town on election day may vote in the county clerk’s office through May 15. The voting machine will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during regular business hours. Voters who are disabled or unable to vote at the polls on election day or at the clerk’s office before election day may apply for a paper absentee ballot through May 9. Applications may be made in the county clerk’s office until 4 p.m. that day.
Class of 1996 reunion committee to meet
The Class of 1996 will be having a meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Owen County Extension Office to discuss the class reunion plans. Anyone wanting to help with the reunion please plan to attend. Any questions please call Stephanie Howard at 484-5703.
GED test is Thursday
The next GED test will be given Thursday. Contact the adult learning center at 60 Old Monterey Road for additional information about the test. Those taking it must be preregistered and evaluated prior to the test date. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. Health board to meet
The Three Rivers District Board of Health will meet at noon Thursday at the Three Rivers District Office, 510 South Main St., Owenton.
Growth Management Committee to meet Thursday
The next meeting of the Growth Management Committee will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the courthouse. The group is meeting with the judge-executive from Henry County to discuss planning and zoning issues in that community and how Owen County can learn from those issues. The public is invited to attend and any person who signed up for the Owen 20/20 land-use management task force is encouraged to attend this meeting.
Library board to meet Friday
The Owen County Public Library Board of Trustees’ regularly scheduled meeting on April 14 has been changed to a special called meeting at 1 p.m. Friday.
Computer classes slated at library
A Microsoft Word I class is slated for Saturday. It is free and offered at the Owen County Public Library from 9 a.m. to noon. The class is for adults who already have basic computer skills. Class size is limited and registration is required. Call the library at 484-3450 or stop by to register.
Second annual Community Health Day is Saturday
The second annual Community Health Day, sponsored by the New Horizons Medical Foundation, will be held at the Owen County Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22. The event will include a number of health screenings, the opportunity to give blood, safety information, door prizes and more. Watch The News-Herald in the coming weeks for more information.
Rabies clinic is Saturday
Three Rivers District Health Department and Dr. John Butts will sponsor a rabies vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Owen County Fairgrounds as part of the Community Health Day. Bring dogs and cats for their annual vaccination for only $5. Other vaccinations will be available upon request for an additional cost. Animals must be on leash or in a cage.
Softball and 3-on-3 basketball tourneys slated
On Saturday as part of the Owen County Community Health Day activities, a softball tournament and 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held at Owen County Park & Fairgrounds. The softball tournament will be single elimination with divisions for both men’s open and church co-ed. Participation is free. The 3-on-3 basketball tournament will have divisions for elementary, middle school, high school and open. Divisions may be combined due to numbers. There is no charge to participate. Deadline for entry is April 20. To enter a team, or for information please call 484-3225.
Garden Club to meet April 26
The Garden Club will meet at the extension office and leave at 10 a.m. April 26 for a visit and presentation at Wilson’s Nursery in Frankfort. For more information call Paula Piper at 484-3017. Anyone interested in gardening is welcome to attend.
Mobile mammogram unit to be in town
The mobile mammogram unit will be at the Owen County Health Department April 27. Call 484-5736 to schedule an appointment.
Kindergarten, preschool registration is April 28, May 19
Parents interested in enrolling their children in preschool or kindergarten in Owen County should contact the Family Resource Center at 484-3595 to make appointments. Appointments will be taken for registration times from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19. Parents will be told what they need to bring with them when they call to make their appointments.
Fashion, variety show is April 28
The 4-H Fashion Review and Variety Show will be at 7 p.m. April 28 at the Owen County Extension Office.
UK alumni to meet May 2
The Owen County UK Alumni Club wil hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 2 at the Owen County Extension Office. The guest speaker will be Tony Neely, media relations director for UK Football. Cost is $15 per person. Tickets for children and students are $10. Call the Owen County Extension Office at 484-5703 to register
Donkey Basketball set for May 3
Project Graduation will host Donkey Basketball at 7 p.m. May 3 at the middle school.
May 9 last day to apply for paper absentee ballot
Voters who are disabled or unable to vote at the precincts on election day May 16 may apply for a paper absentee ballot. May 9 is the last day to apply for a paper ballot. Applications can be made in the Owen County Clerk’s office until 4 p.m. that day.
Safe sitter class set for May 13
Three Rivers District Health Department will host a Safe Sitter class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 13. Safe Sitter is a medically accurate program that teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children. The class teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. Call 484-3412 to register. The class fee is $25. Pre-registration is required.
Cookout for a Cure set for May 26
The annual Cookout for a Cure, sponsored by Owen County Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26 at the courthouse. This will also be the opening day of the Farmers’ Market, which is being moved back to the courthouse lawn this season. All proceeds from the cookout will go to Relay for Life.
