Community Health Day is Saturday

Will feature medical screenings, free food, family activities

 

If it’s time to give blood, you can do it Saturday at the Community Health Day.
If you want to get your blood pressure checked, you can do it Saturday at the Community Health Day.
If it’s time for your dog to have his rabies vaccination, you can do it Saturday at the Community Health Day.
If your kids want to play basketball, enjoy inflatables or get a free hot dog, they can do it Saturday at the Community Health Day.
Sponsored by the New Horizons Medical Foundation, the second annual Community Health Day will feature activities to get residents of the community up off the couch and out into the sunshine as well as offer medical information from local health care providers.
Scheduled activities include:
• Three Rivers Health Department will be providing fluoride varnishing for children.
• Dr. Butts and Three Rivers Health Department will hold a rabies clinic from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The charge for the rabies vaccination is $5. Additional vaccinations will be available for an additional charge as well. All animals must be in cages or on leashes.
• Owen Electric will demonstrate electricity safety.
• New Horizons Medical Center will provide cholesterol and diabetes screenings as well as blood pressure checks.
• The Central Kentucky Blood Center will be on site. Blood donations are encouraged.
• The Owen County Extension Service will be providing information on its walking program and will be giving away pedometers.
• The local emergency services — fire, rescue, ambulance, etc. — will be on hand
• Information will be available about Harborside Healthcare, the North Key KEYS program and other North Key services, the drug and alcohol team, Golden Triangle Health Network, New Horizons Medical Center, the foundation, and more.
• A cornhole tournament.
• A softball tournament.
• A 3-on-3 tournament.
Farmers’ Market vendors have been invited to showcase their goods at the event and the Kentucky State Police is expected to provide fingerprinting for children during the day as well.
A silent auction of items from local merchants will take place in the gazebo during the event. Everything from food items to merchandise can be bid on during the event.
A disc jockey will also be on hand to provide music and other entertainment throughout the day.
The event begins at 11 a.m. at the Owen County Park and Fairgrounds and runs through 2 p.m. Those attending should stop at the registration table to pick up their free food and drink ticket. Other vendors will also be giving away door prizes. Participants are encouraged to visit all the booths to register for those as well.
The New Horizons Medical Foundation was organized to provide support and emphasis on health care and other health initiatives in the community. In the three years in which it has been operating, the foundation has raised more than $750,000 in pledges, has provided equipment and loans to the hospital and has given away several scholarships for local residents pursuing an education in a health-care field.
