Owen County pitcher Lauren Wooten fires a pitch to the plate on March 29 against Western Hills. Wooten struck out 14 batters in the season opener on March 27 against Gallatin County, but left the Western Hills game with an injury.

The Owen County High School softball team had a hard time getting a handle on the ball on March 29 at home during a 14-2 loss to Western Hills.
“Too many errors,” Owen County coach David Wainscott said. “It’s early in the year.”
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Rebels tied the game 1-1, after Sheila Wilson singled to right field and scored when a Western Hills outfielder misplayed a single by Emily Trammel, allowing Wilson to score.
After that the wheels began to come off.
Western Hills scored two runs in the second inning and three more in the third and fourth innings, without a base hit.
Three walks and 10 errors allowed Western Hills to go up 9-2 after four innings.
Much of the Lady Wolverine’s success came via the bunt.
Western Hills bunted the ball continually and Owen County had a hard time fielding the bunts and completing accurate throws to the bases.
“They bunted us to death,” Wainscott said. “That’s what we have to work on — defense.”
Owen County scored its other run in the third inning.
Leadoff batter Kendall Cochran singled and advanced on a passed ball.
She later scored when the Western Hills shortstop couldn’t handle a smash by Krista Thomas.
Western Hills scored five runs in the fifth inning to end the game by the mercy rule.

Gallatin County had two hits.
Owen County struck for four runs in the first inning and seven more in the second inning to take an 11-0 lead.
In the opening frame, Cochran walked and Wilson singled.
After a double steal, both runners scored on an error.
Wooten singled home Thomas, who had reached on an error, and Kristen Haines brought in Wainscott with a sacrifice fly.
In the second, Wooten had an RBI single and Trammel knocked home three runs with a triple.
